Looking Back: Senior Advice to UMD’s Underclassmen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

The end of the year is here again, and for seniors, this means graduation. Between cramming for finals, facing the real world and enjoying their last few weeks at the University of Maryland, there is no better place for advice than from the people looking back.

After four years, the class of 2012 has mastered the ins and outs of College Park. From bucket lists to life advice, some UMD seniors have advice to share with you.

“Never be afraid to seize an opportunity,” senior broadcast journalism major Lia Reich says. “Take an internship in a city you’ve never been to before or run for office in a club you’re part of.”

Senior government and politics and art history major Martha Van Lieshout agrees. “Take advantage of everything you can on and off campus, and don’t lose touch with your academic advisors. Try to become a part of as many student groups that you can,” VanLieshout says. “Maryland has some really cool people.”

Beyond academics, these seniors suggest things to do before you leave College Park.

“I actually accomplished something on my College Park bucket list the other day, take a picture with Testudo!” Reich says.

VanLieshout suggests going to the farmers market outside of Cole Fieldhouse. “It’s new as of this week, but I couldn’t believe I was about to leave College Park without going there.”

In a time filled with nostalgia for their college experience and excitement for the future, they say that most importantly, enjoy your time here.

“Live in the moment. Go out on Tuesday nights when you have class the next morning, go lay on the mall on a beautiful day,” Reich says. “I wish it wasn’t cliché for me to say this, but it goes by so fast . . . really fast.”
