HC Summer 101: The Ultimate Summer Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

It’s the end of the semester and for many of us that means the beginning of long and stressful nights.  Summer is so close you can practically smell the sunscreen and feel the sand between your toes.  What will you be doing with your summer break? After surveying students all over Iowa City, I have compiled a list of summer “Bucket List” for any student seeking to make the most out of their time out of the classroom!

Road trip!

College gives little to no time to travel. That is why a road trip this summer is absolutely necessary! Go to a theme park or take a group of friends camping! Visit some family members you have not seen in a while or just drive until you cannot drive anymore.  Take advantage of the lack of responsibilities that summer gives you!

Watch Every Episode or Movie in your Favorite Series

Whether it is a show that you need to catch up on or just an all-time favorite, grab the girls, pop some corn, and settle in for a long day of movies and girl talk.

Face a Fear!

Do something you never thought you could do! Go bungee jumping, try skydiving, or jump on a roller coaster; anything to get your adrenaline pumping.  Who knows? The thing you feared may even be something you want to do again!

Set and Accomplish a Goal

For me, my summer goal is getting back in shape.  Maybe your summer goal is to figure out what you want to study in college, line up a job for after, or just meet new people.  Whatever your goal is, make a specific plan and go for it. Nothing feels better than being able to say you accomplished what you set out to do.

Learn Something New!

Try your hand at the guitar, pick up Rosetta Stone in a language that you do not know, experience a sport that you have never played before. Trying new things is a great way to get to know yourself better. For all you know, this new thing could be the best thing to ever happen to you.

Find an Internship

Future employers are looking for students with experience and ambition. Interning for a company in your field of study can be the difference between you and the other people applying.  It not only shows your willingness to try, it also shows your drive to succeed.  Take some time this summer to plan for the future. You’ll thank yourself later.

Work!

This is a word that most people would rather try to avoid, but, in all honesty, summer is one of the best times to work and save up some money for school next semester.  Many of you will return home for the summer where you will be living in your parent’s house and eating the food your parents buy.  Imagine how much you will save on rent, utilities, and food? Work may not seem appealing now, but you have to look for a job that is the right choice for you to really enjoy your time on the clock.

Try all of Baskin Robbin’s Ice Cream Flavors!

You know you have been wanting to do this forever, no use in denying it.  And besides, they are all totally delicious. Your taste buds are just waiting for the new flavors, so give in and indulge yourself in a little ice creamy bliss.

Kick a Bad Habit

In high school, I never drank soda.  In college, soda has become my bad habit.  I am sure all of us have picked up a few things we are not proud of in college. Summer is the perfect time to kick those bad habits right out of your life!

Just Breathe!

Do not forget to take some time to just relax this summer. Lay out on a towel with a book, nap in the middle of the day, plug your headphones in and take your dog for a walk. Whatever happens this summer, enjoy it and remember to find time to breathe.

So what does your summer “Bucket List” look like? Are you planning on doing something fantastic that didn’t make it onto this list? Post it below and let us know!

Emily is a junior at the University of Iowa and is studying Journalism and Pre-Law with a minor in Health Communication. She has been a part of the Her Campus University of Iowa team since it was founded in 2010 and is a member of Ed on Campus. She has grown to love magazine writing and editing and if she somehow can't land her dream job (to be Carrie Bradshaw), she wouldn't mind settling for a job in the magazine industry. If nothing else, she hopes to attend law school somewhere in the Bay Area out West, her favorite place to be. Since the age of 15, Emily spent her summers in California, doing internships and falling in love with San Francisco. Some of her other interests include her 4-month-old longhaired wiener dog Henry, blogging, celebrity gossip, sushi, Private Practice, fro-yo, being a journalism nerd, and anything involving good conversation with good people. Although she's not exactly sure of her plans for the future, she knows journalism will somehow be the driving force in her career.
