We Don’t Need Letters Anyways: What to Wear to Spring Parties

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

It is half way through the spring semester and the remaining weekends at UGA are filled with everyone’s favorite kind of festivities—spring parties. The question that remains for many girls is: What do we wear?

Last year Panhellenic passed a rule stating that no sorority letters may be worn to any fraternity parties. This was at first seen as a travesty, because it was always tradition to appear at the spring parties decked out in one’s Greek letters from head to toe. However, Panhellenic decided this attire was no longer fitting for such parties, given the threats of “dirty rushing.” While at first puzzled and confused on where to turn for a new wardrobe, the ladies of Athens have a ton choices right here in town for fun and eccentric spring party attire.

The obvious choice is to attend dressed in cute, stylish clothing. Correct me if I’m wrong, however, but isn’t the point of these day parties supposed to be letting loose before the end of school? Give yourself some freedom from trying to look perfect and stick to the casual tank and shorts attire we are all used to during this time of year. Just because we can’t wear letters anymore doesn’t mean we have to recede back to the outfits we sport downtown.

A good go-to for tops is funky t-shirts. Junkmans Daughters Brother, better known as Junkmans, on Clayton Street is a prime location in Athens for finding wacky t-shirts that show some personality. Replace those letters for a cheesy quote or an image of John Belushi from Animal House. Have some fun with your outfit, because that’s what these parties are all about.

Toss out the sunglasses marked with your letters and replace them with the bright sunglasses sold at Kum’s Fashions, also located on Clayton. They sell cheap pairs for under ten dollars in every color of the rainbow, not to mention the plethora of shapes and sizes. Don’t feel the need to wear your nice Ray-Bans, because they will just get trampled on. Go with the easy and care-free look instead—it’s cheaper.

Some other ideas you may not at first consider are overalls, crop tops, comfy Nike shorts, or bathing suit tops under tanks. Mix and match. Remember it’s almost summer and these parties may be your last chance to let it all before exams. Having fun with what you wear is step one to a good spring party.
