Justine Lohrey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

Relay For Life is one of the most important and exciting events that occurs at Franklin and Marshall College.  In an effort to support those who are battling cancer, F&M hosted Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society that donates real-hair wigs to cancer patients across the country.  Justine Lohrey, one of the many generous women who donated their hair on March 30th, talks about her experience and her new hair-do!

Deciding to cut all of your hair off is not an easy decision…Why did you do it?
I decided to cut my hair off for two reasons. One, because I couldn’t remember the last time I had one! Two, my mom is a cancer survivor and although she has never worn a wig, I’ve seen how thinning hair becomes a daily struggle.
Was this your first time donating your hair?
This was my first time donating, but I’ve been thinking about it for years because my hair has always been long.
How long was it before and how much did you chop off?
I’m not sure the exact measurement, but my hair was down to my belly button before. I chopped off ten inches, which put it a bit underneath my collar bone.
Do you like having short hair now?
I DO like having short hair now! Some people still consider it long-ish, but for me it’s almost like having a bob. I’ve been saving so much conditioner and time in the shower it’s unbelievable.
What were you thinking as it was being cut?
When my hair was being cut I was thinking so many things. Making sure I don’t cry, trying to smile, wondering how short it will be, and if my cutter could just hurry up haha! I didn’t realize how thick my hair was compared to others, so it took some muscle to get the scissors through (:
What is the best part about Pantene Beautiful Lengths?
The best part about Pantene Beautiful Lengths is that the wigs go to women battling cancer for free. Real hair wigs are expensive so it’s great that the women receiving a wig from PBL can focus on their health, not the price.

Fun fact, I was the one who had the wonderful privilege to cut Justine’s hair! And it’s true; it was quite a struggle to cut such gorgeously thick hair. Sorry for the suspense, Justine!
