American University Appoints New SOC Dean

Communication technology expert and Champlain College professor Jeffrey Rutenbeck has been appointed the new Dean of the School of Communication here at American.

The founding dean of the Division of Communication and Creative Media at Champlain College in Vermont, Rutenbeck is a professional in his field. A great assent to the School of Communication, his research on social and cultural change includes the profound impact of technology on society. Rutenbeck received a BA in History and Political Science from Colorado College, followed by an MA in journalism from University of Missouri-Columbia. He also has a PhD in Communication from the University of Washington.

At the University of Denver’s School of Communication, Rutenbeck served as a member of the faculty and administration for 17 years. “Honored and energized to join such an accomplished and dynamic community,” Rutenbeck will assume the position on July 1 of this year.

A reception was held on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30p.m. at the Perch in Anderson Hall. The event marked the current SOC dean Larry Kirkman’s 11 years at American. President Neil Kerwin and Provost Scott A. Bass are hosting also hosting a reception for Kirkman on Thursday, May 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the Abramson Founders Room in the School of International Service. Kirkman will be returning to teaching in the School of Communication in July.

Born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Claire Shriver is a Public Communication major and Marketing minor at American University in Washington, DC. She is the Editor-in-Chief for Her Campus American, Vice President of Communication for AU Social Media Club and an AU Ambassador. This past summer she interned in the Features Department at Marie Claire magazine and has a passion for travel, magazines, and film photography. Kristen Wiig makes Claire cry with laughter and Adele makes her swoon.
