Attending a state school means lecture-style teaching, a huge campus, and an awesome sport or two (Women’s Basketball, duh!). But as collegiettes, we should also embrace how to utilize all of the resources provided for us at our large, diverse college campus. Here, I’ve compiled a short list of how to be a savvy UConn student!
1. Update your resume at the Center for Undergraduate Education
While this may seem like a no-brainer, taking that short trip to the CUE may give you tips that change and improve your resume! The CUE also hands out handbooks that detail how your resume should look after each year of undergrad. So helpful! Be sure to do this at least once, so when that perfect volunteer/internship/job opportunity shows up, you have a polished resume to send over stat!
2. Check out the display windows in the Student Union
Not only do the display windows give us something to look at on our way to the Union Street Market, but they can be informational! Last month, my academic fraternity, Phi Delta Chi, created a display about sleep awareness and how to improve sleep hygiene. These amped-up, 3Dalternatives to poster boards and thumbtacks provide 3D representations of everything from sports to upcoming events to organizations! They’re a great way to stay up-to-date on campus life.
3. Become a regular at a tutoring center
I don’t mean the Q-Center – we all know how packed it gets in that cozy corner of the first floor when exam time comes! If you’re taking a Q-course, not only should you check out your TA’s office hours, but see if the department has a tutoring center. Frequenting T201 in the Chemistry Building may help your studying when that big exam comes, or maybe your English department has people willing to proofread and critique papers for that tough W-course. Get to know the TAs that offer extra help – they can be life savers!
4. Scout out the surrounding area
Most freshmen may not have realized the types of places right outside of UConn that are just a bus-ride to Buckley. The up and coming Storrs Center will offer new stores and restaurants right on Storrs Road! Also, check out Oriental Café on Storrs Road, which offers sushi and teriyaki bento boxes stuffed with the Chinese food we love at an affordable price! Why not take a walk to Starbucks and spend the day editing that essay you’ve been dreading? Freshly brewed coffee and a sunny window can be just the inspiration you need in Storrs!
