3 Movie Trailers You Should See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Between course-work, work-work, and extra-curricular activities, TCNJ students barely have time to go to the movies, let alone to see what’s showing or coming soon. Still somewhat depressed that there are no more Harry Potter film adaptations to look forward to, movie-obsessed Rachel decided to look up the next big thing or rom-com and share it with you.

The Cabin in the Woods (4/13)

From Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, the writers of the cult TV hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer, comes this new American horror-comedy about five friends who go to a remote—and we’re talking “doesn’t even show up on the GPS”-remote—cabin in the woods for a break. The Cabin in the Woods isn’t your typical “haunted cabin” tale, as the trailer warns when it states, “You think you know the story…”

With two-way mirrors, an invisible barrier, and a shot of Hunger Games-esque game-makers in a control room put to the audible line, “to the Killing Floor,” this definitely doesn’t look like just another “haunted cabin” movie. When Chris Hemsworth (soon to be starring in Snow White and the Huntsman and as Thor in The Avengers…and he’s Liam Hemsworth’s older brother) says, “We should split up,” and another character agrees, I laughed when the genre-conscious guy replies, “Really?” The movie has already gotten some great reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes!?!) and is being hailed as both “inventive” and as a self-aware genre hybrid. See it when it comes out on April 13 if you’re into horror films, or see it if you’re not. I’m personally not the biggest horror person, but this still looks like something to watch out for.

The Lucky One (4/20)

The trailer for The Lucky One, out April 20, starts in a war zone, with…Zac Efron?! playing a young soldier saved from an explosion by the discovery of a photograph. Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, this love story starts with his quest to find the girl in the photograph that saved his life. Like in other films based on Nicholas Sparks’ novels, this one looks like there will be a lot of kissing and…romance, but also like other Sparks’ stories, there is an obstacle to their love—her aggressive ex-husband, and shockingly, the photograph that brought them together. The photograph of her that brings him luck in Iraq, and makes him the lucky one.

In this featurette Nicholas Sparks discusses writing the novel, creating the characters, and exploring the concept of destiny. You can tell from the trailer that their love is destined, represented by that chance discovery of the photograph, but their love is also realistic, and takes time. Efron looks great and this movie, coming from the same guy who wrote The Notebook, is something to look forward to next month.

The Five-Year Engagement (4/27)

There’s fun music playing while Jason Segel’s character Tom gets down on one knee to propose to Emily Blunt’s character Violet and The Five-Year Engagement already looks like something potentially very entertaining. Plus, it’s from the producer of the awesome comedy from last year, Bridesmaids, and is directed by the guy who wrote Get Him to the Greek, Fun with Dick and Jane, and The Muppets.

As the title suggests, the movie’s engaged couple has to delay their wedding, due to career changes and other life adjustments that cause some relationship problems in the long run but still look hilarious in the trailer. A line from the trailer that made me laugh out loud while my roommate was trying to sleep was, “Any ideas when this wedding might happen? Grandparents do have a tendency to die,” spoken right in front of the grandparents nodding along.

If this follows the trend that Bridesmaids established in genuinely funny romantic comedies, which it looks like it will, then I am genuinely excited to see this. If you would like to see Tom and Violet’s Wedding Blog (which is kind of adorable), visit www.tomandviolet.com.
