SLIDESHOW: 19 Campus Cuties With Cute Animals

Name: Derek Cormier
School/Year: University of Central Florida ’14
Age: 26
Hometown: Melbourne Beach, FL
Major: Electrical engineering, but I might change it to mechanical or environmental. I like building things; putting things together. I’ve always been interested in inventing things. I worked construction for a while, so I like working with my hands and seeing what I built. Environmental engineering has many opportunities to work outside and geographical aspects.

If You Could Be Anywhere, Where Would You Be?: Hawaii – I always wanted to surf there. I’ve been surfing since I was ten. Oahu has the best waves, but it’s an expensive place to live.

What Do You Love Doing?: Surfing, diving, fishing, reading informational books, anything I can learn about health and nutrition. I love the discovery channel, especially the shows where they put people in the wild to fend for themselves. The leaps and bounds people have to go through are incredible, and ancient people had to do that all the time. I love sports, and I like to go to the beach with my yellow lab, Sam.

Describe Your Dream Girl: She’d have to be genuine and family-oriented; someone active who lives a healthy lifestyle; smart and responsible, but open-minded and willing to learn new things. I like someone who doesn’t obsess about her appearance, but is still attractive; a girl who is warm and caring and not too self-centered.

I’m a more stay-at-home and watch-a-movie kind of guy, or I want to spend time outside. I’m pretty simple, so I like a simple girl, and she has to like dogs.

You Have a Tattoo?: It goes up my arm. Poseidon is at the top and there’s a Chinese dragon wrapped around him. The dragon is used as a symbol of power, strength, respect, and knowledge in martial arts. With this great power you’re attaining, you need to have respect for it. Poseidon is the god of the ocean, and I love the ocean. I’ve always been interested in Greek culture. I also have another one: a shark holding a surfboard.

Your Craziest Adventure: My buddies and I surfed some hurricane swells. They were 15- to 20-foot waves and we were over a hundred yards out. A news crew took pictures of us, and we ended up in the paper. But we got stuck out there for almost eight hours. By that time, it was dark. We were smashed by waves until they dragged us in. It was straight white wash, so there wasn’t enough to ride. It’d hold you under. There were times we thought that was it, but the next day we wanted to go again.

Name
: David Alejandro Fontenot
School/Year: University of Virginia ’15
Hometown: McLean, Virginia
Major: Pre-Commerce and Spanish
Relationship Status: Single

Activities Around Grounds: Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Flag Football, Wind Ensemble, and Jeffersonian Brewing Society

Best Spot For A First Date: In Charlottesville, Backyard. Back home, my patio. I like to light up the fire pit and grill my own food.

If I could be reborn as anybody it would be: Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia.

If I could date a Disney princess I would date: Jasmine

Work Out Routine: A lot of running (4-6 miles), pushups, abdominal work, pull ups and some free weights. If I had the option/time, I would just surf and hike.

Favorite thing about a girl is her: Down to earth personality

Most embarrassing moment: I got caught in the pouring rain on my way to class, walked in soaking wet, and then it turned out I was in the wrong class. I had to run across Grounds to the right class and repeat the whole soaking wet embarrassment again.

Something most people don’t know about me: I’m a citizen of Spain and Spanish was my first language, even though I was brought up in the US.

Current iPod repeat song: Ray Charles by Chiddy Bang

I can’t live without my: Dog. I skype her on a weekly basis.

My life hero is: Morgan Freeman

I feel most attractive in my: Office attire (suit and tie)

Name: Keith Gilvar
School/Year: Colby College ’14
Major: Philosophy and Government
Hometown: Sherman, TX
Dorm:  Heights
Favorite dining hall:  Dana
Relationship status: Single

Three things you can’t live without:  My siblings, my dogs, and my favorite pair of jeans.

Interests: Anything physically active, playing the guitar, sailing.

Favorite movie: It’s a toss-up between The Big Lebowski and Wedding Crashers.

Favorite song: “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” by Bob Dylan.

Favorite professional athlete: Tough call, but I’d say Wes Welker (fellow Texan).

Favorite book: The Analects of Confucius

What do you do on campus? I play varsity tennis, and I’m a member of the debate society. Aside from that, I sleep, eat, make it to the AC on my own time now and again, and try to get homework done somewhere in between.

What’s one girl trend you don’t understand? You know those super thick belts that girls wear up high, riding up well above their pants or shorts? I always find that one fascinating, since I always think of a belt serving a kind of purpose or utility, namely, supporting one’s pants. Then again, I’m not even sure if it’s still a ‘trend’ anymore…

What do you look for in a girl? The very first thing I see in a girl is her smile. Period. In fact, at the risk of sounding shallow, I’ll admit that a set of impeccable pearly whites is something of a prerequisite for me. I find that I also do cartwheels for girls who ‘get’ my sense of humor (most who do have to know me pretty well, but the ones who recognize when I’m trying to be funny right off the bat make me want to propose on the spot).

What’s your favorite pick-up line? I tend to rely solely on my good looks, charm, and thinking on my feet as far as approaching women is concerned. If I had to go with a rehearsed pickup line, however, the movie Hall Pass had an opener I found clever: “How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice.” Made me chuckle.

What’s your best feature? My teeth, hands down, and I work hard to keep it that way. After all, considering what I look for in the opposite sex, I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t!

Which author, dead or alive, would you want to write your biography? I love the prose and humor of Bill Bryson, so I’d go with him.

What’s your favorite quote? Oscar Wilde has a pretty deep one: “Where would you be now if you took your dog on a walk and never once pulled back on the leash?”

What’s cooler than cool? Sailing. For one, it’s classy, and as my dad once told me, sailing is one of those rare things in life in which participating in the activity itself is unfailingly better than the idea of it. We’ve all had exposure to things like, say, an underwhelming sexual encounter, or perhaps the novelty of that brand new sports car wears off after a while, but somehow sailing is a brand new and exciting experience every time.

If you could talk to the people of the North Pole, what would you ask them? I’d inquire as to their contingency plan where global warming is concerned.

If you could be one celebrity, who would you be and why? George Clooney, because I want to age like a fine red wine and be that goddamn good looking when I’m in my fifties.

Write your memoir in 6 words… I sat alone and thought peacefully.

What’s your go-to outfit on a Saturday night? Depends on the night, but I don’t believe there’s such a thing as being “overdressed,” if that tells you anything.

What’s your most embarrassing moment? It’s difficult to pinpoint one, but really any rough Sunday morning in Dana when multiple people I definitely don’t recall meeting tell me how funny I was the night before.  I’m never sure whether to laugh or apologize.

Describe yourself in 3 adjectives… I’m often reserved, but also friendly and entertaining.

If you were stuck on an abandoned island, what would be the one thing you’d want with you? Kimono, dog.

If you could go on a date with any of the Kardashian sisters, who would you pick? Neither, I prefer Kris Jenner.

What music are you listening to these days? Norah Jones, Fugees, Enya

Favorite spot at Haverford and why? Basement of the DC. Its cozy down there.

Celebrity crush? It’s got to be a toss up between Wanda Sykes and Nelly Furtado.

[pagebreak]
Name: Phillip Smoley
School/Year: Clemson University ’12
Hometown: Los Gatos, California
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Relationship Status: In a Relationship

What are you involved in on campus? Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, ASME

What is your dream job? I would love to design parts of cars for BMW in Greenville or parts of private jets for Gulfstream in Savannah.

What is your ideal date? I love to go out for sushi and then go somewhere fun afterwards. Its always fun to watch people attempt karaoke or listen to live music.

What do you look for in a girl? There are a lot of important things to look for in a girl. I would say that its more important about the behavioral traits and appearance is a little less important. I like girls that are active with something whether it is yoga or a sport. I love when a girl has a great smile. Intelligence is another top priority for me, I don’t want to limit conversation.

What is your biggest pet peeve? I have a few but I think the most riveting for me is when someone speaks with food in their mouth.

What is your most embarrassing moment at Clemson? I’ll summarize the details of this story for you. I woke up freshman year in my bed, which had been conveniently relocated to the Johnstone stairway. One of my friends passed by on the way to breakfast and asked what I was doing. I had to use my comforter as a makeshift toga and ask the security guard to let me in. My friends on the hall had taken advantage of my ability to sleep through anything and pushed me down the stairs in my mattress. They had forgotten to bring me back inside. There’s a video of it somewhere online.

What is your favorite place to eat in Clemson? I can’t pick a favorite because there are so many great places to eat. I would have to say it’s a tie between the Esso, which has phenomenal meat and three’s during the week, and the Smoking Pig, where the bbq is unmatched and simply incredible.

What are some of your hobbies? I play soccer for my fraternity’s intramural team. I also love to grill with my friends. We grill out several times a week and have a bunch of people over which is always a great time.

Describe yourself in 3 words?
Impatient
Confident
Compassionate

Do you have any advice for girls at Clemson? I think one of the greatest qualities that the girls here at Clemson possess, as a whole, is their level of class. I love to see girls in sundresses and all dressed up. It’s definitely a unique quality and it sets Clemson girls apart from the rest. I guess my advice would be to keep this level of class to show that Clemson girls are the best in the world!

Name: Dixon Muller
School/Year: William & Mary College ’14
Relationship Status: Single/Mystery
Hometown: Weems, VA
Major: English

What are your post-graduation plans? I plan to become a high school English teacher.

What do you look for in a girl? I look for someone who can make me laugh, someone who’s down to earth, and someone I can see as a best friend, rather than just a romantic interest.

Best thing about girls at William & Mary? I like how girls here are very independent and driven.

Involved in on campus? I’m in Beta Theta Pi fraternity, as well as a member of the William & Mary Croquet team.

Idea of a great first date? Date party at Library Tavern, nuff said.

Favorite thing a girl can wear? Whatever girls feel they are most confident in is the most attractive. But cowboy boots always help.

Your go-to move when you see a girl you are interested in? I would mention something I notice about her that’s not necessarily obvious. Basically anything that doesn’t sound like a cliche pick up line, something that shows i’m attentive, yet not creepy.

[pagebreak]
Name: Benjamin Taylor Rehbein
School: University of Montana
Age: 20
Major: Creative Writing
Hometown: Portland, OR

Favorite place to study: I love quiet coffeeshops, like Zootown Brew. If you get there at the right time you can snag a big cushy couch or chair and they make awesome americanos. That, or I like to set my living/dining/kitchen area up with everything I could ever need to be productive. Pot of coffee, snacks, a table all to myself and loud, pulsing dance music. I do my best writing to dance music haha.

What I love about the UM: I love the creative writing and english departments. Professors like Dr. Ashby Kinch and Robert Stubblefield get me stoked to be a part of this school. Also, I love the mountains.

Interests: I’m trying hard to think of one cool thing but uniqueness is escaping me. Um, I play three instruments. I’m an amateur bike mechanic, and love building bicycles. I hunt and flyfish. I’m a little bit claustrophobic, especially in large crowds. I’m good at blowing smoke rings. I’m physically incapable of somersaulting or doing a cartwheel.

In a girl: I’m shopping for someone who’s motivated and driven but still loves to get down and have a good time. Picky eaters apply elsewhere. I like cute, cheesy smiles and girls who laugh out loud. I’m 6’7″, so if you’re tall its a major bonus, but I’m not too choosy when it comes to body shapes and sizes.

What I learned from my first heartbreak: People do not always say what they mean or mean what they say.

Plans for the future: Well, I graduate pretty soon, which is exciting. I have plans to head to culinary school after I obtain my fine arts degree, where I’ll get my french certificate and then go to work as a chef for a while. The ultimate dream is to own and operate my own farm and restaurant, a completely sustainable dining experience, farm to table, the way it should be. I want everything we serve to be handmade and done in house, right down to the beer and alcohol. How cool would that be?

Name: Matt Busch
School/Year: Providence College ’14
Hometown: Middletown, New Jersey
Major: Accounting

What made you choose accounting as your major? I really liked the class when I took it, and I’m very good with numbers. That’s pretty much why I chose it over history.

What are you looking forward to during Christmas break? I would like to spend time with my family and friends and I’m planning on relaxing a lot.

What’s your favorite Christmas tradition? Going to midnight mass with my family because it’s a really nice way for us to bond.

Do you have any siblings? I have a sister, Meghan. She’s 20 and goes to the  College of New Jersey.

Are you close with your sister? We’re pretty close, yeah. We do spend time together, but we also fight a lot. At the end of the day, we love each other though.

Do you have any pets? I have a chocolate lab named Hayley May. She’s 7 years old and she’s the love of my life. I’ve always loved dogs ever since I was a little boy, and I got her in 6th grade for Christmas. She thinks she’s human, she’ll yawn at you when you talk to her if you’re saying something boring. She knows.

What’d you do over Thanksgiving break? I went to the parade in New York City and hung out with my friends. I saw a lot of balloons and acts including Mary J. Blige.

Do you have a favorite balloon? I like Snoopy. He’s really classic. But seeing him up-close in person was a little disappointing because he’s super old and beat up. They need a new Snoopy balloon. After Snoopy, I’d probably say Buzz Lightyear.

Is Toy Story one of your favorite movies? It is definitely my favorite Disney movie. And I think we can all admit to tearing up at the end of the third one. I got pretty upset when it looked like they were going to get burned in the furnace. It was really touching.

Do you play any sports? I like to play basketball, football and baseball. I play intramurals at PC and we do very well. Hopefully we’ll win an intramural championship t-shirt one day.

How’d you do on your last game? It’s a sore subject. We lost our 3-on-3 which ended our season unfortunately.

What sport would you say is your favorite? My favorite sport would probably be baseball. I’ve played it for most of my life and I’m a diehard Yankees fan.

What do you like to do on the weekends? I like to go on adventures and do spontaneous things with my friends. When I hang out with people we don’t really plan ahead and just go where the wind takes us.

So what do you look for in a girl? I want a girl that’s really nice—a sweetheart. I want someone who’s really down to earth, on the taller side (because I’m very tall),  and someone who wants to have a good time. I think it’d be good if she didn’t worry too much about the little things in life because life’s too short.

What are your turn ons/turn offs? I really don’t like drama queens. Someone who would complain a lot…I like someone who’s free-spirited. If something bad is going to happen, I think it’s nice if a girl can just shake it off. I also like it when she cares about her family and friends deeply because that means she’ll probably care about me in the same way. I also like someone who presents herself well and is well-mannered.

What’s your idea of a perfect date? I would like to take a lovely girl out to dinner and then do an activity afterwards like mini golf, ice skating…something that would help us get to know each other better. Then bring her home and hopefully go on a second date later on.

Favorite Movie: The Departed

Favorite Music: Anything that sounds good. No mainstream b.s. or country though.

Any talents you may have: Life!

Name: Tim Visclosky
School/Year: University of Maryland ’12
Major: General Biology and Communication
Hometown: Silver Spring, MD
Residence: College Park, MD
Relationship Status: Sorry girls, this cutie is taken!  He’s currently in a long-term relationship.
Activities/Interests: Travel, very active with the American Medical Student Association on-campus.

HC: What was one of your best experiences at UMD?
TV: I’ve been able to study abroad during two winter terms in Peru and Belize and I spent last semester studying abroad in Ghana. But if you mean on-campus, my organization helped to hold a press conference last year celebrating a specific portion of the federal health care reform bill. I was able to be a part of and it allowed me to meet the Surgeon General.

HC: What are your post-graduation plans? Dream job?
TV: I will be going to medical school next year. My dream job is to be a practicing physician, not sure what kind yet.

HC: If you could pick a song that you feel represents you, what would that be?
TV: I’m not really sure, I don’t listen to a lot of music, but I can say that Eye of the Tiger is what I play before most big events in my life.

HC: Do you think it’s the guy’s job to make the first move, or do you consider yourself the type that prefers being approached by girls?
TV: I guess I wouldn’t really have a preference. I would typically expect to be the one to make the first move but I wouldn’t be opposed either way.

HC: What’s the first thing you notice about a girl/what kind of girls do you like?
TV: I like girls who are smart and who don’t share all the same interests as me. I wouldn’t want to date someone who was too much like me. My girlfriend and I are polar opposites in terms of most of our interests and I find that that keeps both of us trying and learning about new things as we get involved in each other’s things.

HC: What are some turn-offs/pet peeves/deal breakers?
TV: I don’t like girls who wear too much make-up or who clearly concentrate too much on their appearance. I don’t like it when people are lazy and apathetic, I don’t care what you’re interested in so long as you are passionate about it.

HC: Describe what the ideal first date would be like?
TV: That would probably depend on the girl. I would like something simple and enjoyable and that would give me an opportunity to get to know the person. I would try to plan something that I knew they would enjoy but not too high pressure. I see first dates as just an opportunity to learn about someone, not something that should be overplanned or stressed over.

HC: What kind of relationships do you prefer?  (None, long-term, short-term, quick flings, etc.)
TV: I prefer long-term relationships.

HC: Have you ever done something crazy or out of your own comfort zone to impress a girl?
TV: I can’t think of anything, but that’s probably just because the things that would be outside my comfort zone would probably not impress my girlfriend so I’ve never really had a reason to.

HC: If you could describe yourself in just three words, what would they be?
TV: Ambitious, curious, loyal.

What exactly is Weird Plate?: Weird Plate is a website (www.weirdplate.com) that serves as a source for critique on information on the topics of art, fashion, film, music, and people. The theme of the information that Weird Plate provides is obviously weird, but by weird, we don’t mean awkward and unattractive. Our definition of weird is almost the complete opposite. Our definition of weird is a compliment to something that stands outside of the norm. Something that not everybody may not understand, but they will embrace and respect, because they’ve never been apart of, heard, felt, or seen anything quite like it before.

Along with our critiques, Weird Plate will also be providing our followers with information about events where Weird Plate members will be in attendance, and events where Weird Plate members won’t be, but wish that we were. Weird Plate will also be sponsoring events of our own at various locations. At the events we host, Weird Plate members will be playing out the bangers and putting out the vibes better than any other event that you could possibly be at, ever. And if you’d like Weird Plate to DJ, or maybe even sponsor your event, please let us know. We’re available for booking, and will bring the party to an entirely different level, because in the end, we just want to get weird with you. Soon we will be launching our own line of Weird Ware and other Weird Plate items to fit our followers and even further raise the hype about Weird Plate.

Class at Cornell: Multivariable Calculus (MATH 1920) and Transition to Java (CS 1130)

Quote: “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm’s way.” – John Paul Jones

This patriotic stud is only a freshman at Cornell, but as a member of NROTC – that’s N for Navy and ROTC for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps -, he already has the necessary leadership skills and sense of duty to make any man crush-worthy. He joined NROTC because he missed the lifestyle after his dad retired from the Air Force: the commitment to serve his country and defend our freedom has always been a part of Josh’s life. But when he’s not performing his duties as class leader, doing drills or community service in NROTC, Josh can take you sailing or engage you in a rousing game of lacrosse, soccer, or paintball. According to Jenna* ‘12, Josh deserves to be this week’s Cutie because he is “intelligent, buff, disciplined, responsible and goal oriented! Not to mention he’s a fan of being a mile high…” She means that Josh’s favorite thing about his naval career is flying fighter jets! Although it might be safer to keep “joining the ROTC mile high club” off of your Big Red Ambition to-do list, do let your heart take a dive for this dedicated Dare Devil!

Fun Facts:
Why NROTC? My dad was Air Force, and when he retired I missed the lifestyle. I also wanted to serve my country by risking my life defending the freedom that we have. I actually applied to Air Force and Navy ROTC, but the Navy offered me full tuition no questions asked. I respected that and took the Navy scholarship.

Proudest Accomplishment: Earning 10% of the total scholarship money awarded at my school while getting into Cornell and NROTC

How do you spend your summers? I spend as much time at my cottage jet skiing/boating on the St. Lawrence as possible. I also have NROTC training for month during the summer, which involves being active duty on a ship or on land learning about how the Navy works.

What do you look for in a girl? Attractive, intelligent, and a good friend.

Best things about Cornell: The location, difficult classes, and the new friends I’ve made

Which of the 161 Things are you most looking forward to? 17. Go to the Fuertes Observatory on North Campus and gaze at meteor showers

Thoughts on Charlie Sheen? Charlie Sheen is all over the news because he’s a celebrity drug addict, while Andrew Wilfahrt 31, Brian Tabada 21, Rudolph Hizon 22, Chauncy Mays 25, are soldiers who gave their lives with no media attention. There are more important people than Charlie Sheen, a lot more.

Career Prospects: Fly fighter jets in the Navy, then retire from the military and fly into space for a private space flight company.

Kelsey Damassa is in her senior year at Boston College, majoring in Communications and English. She is a native of Connecticut and frequents New York City like it is her job. On campus, she is the Campus Correspondent for the Boston College branch of Her Campus. She also teaches group fitness classes at the campus gym (both Spinning and Pump It Up!) and is an avid runner. She has run five half-marathons as well as the Boston Marathon. In her free time, Kelsey loves to bake (cupcakes anyone?), watch Disney movies, exercise, read any kind of novel with a Starbucks latte in hand, and watch endless episodes of "Friends" or "30 Rock."
