Summer-like weather has hit Gambier early this year—and while it may confirm our worst fears that the ice is melting and polar bears are dying, the bright tulips along Middle Path make walking to your 8:10 MWF actually enjoyable. My past two springs at Kenyon (I missed last spring because I was abroad) have included some of my best “this-is-so-Kenyon” memories, so I have compiled a list of why spring at Kenyon is where it’s at.

1. Peirce Lawn becomes the new library/student center/dining hall.
When you’ve spent the past four months hiding every visible trace of skin and running from Peirce to the library while trying not to slip on ice, how can you resist the warm rays of sunshine? The library becomes a prison, every meal is a picnic, and you can never walk down middle path without seeing someone you know – a quick “Hey, how are you?” turns into an hour-long conversation.

2. Sundresses, Shorts, and Sandals.
You never have to spend all that time taking off your winter layers when you go inside and then putting them all back on again before you go outside. It’s like living in a bath – you feel best when you’re practically naked.

3. Swimming in the Kokosing.
It’s the cleanest river in Ohio and it’s just a short walk away! If Kenyon were Florida, the Kokosing would be Daytona Beach. And Peirce Lawn would be Miami, because it’s way more glitzy and glam.

4. Outdoor parties.
My New Apt smells bad enough without 15 sweaty people dancing in my common room (the maximum number of guests it can hold). When parties spill outside, everyone is happier.

5. Life is green instead of gray!
Come February, my outlook on life is about as bleak as the sky. Those Kenyon colored tulips on Middle Path remind me that life is beautiful, and my increased levels of melatonin make everything happier.

Caroline Black is a senior Drama major at Kenyon College. In addition to co-founding and writing for her school's HC branch, Caroline is co-president of Beer and Sex, Kenyon's student-run freshman orientation program (and she enjoys making jokes about that title as much as you do). When she's not doing hippy-dippy acting warm-ups or volunteering with her service organization, The Archon Society, Caroline enjoys watching "Parks and Recreation" and dismaying her friends with terrible puns.
