Mickey Davis and The Local

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Name: Mickey Davis
Major: Nutrition Science
Year: 2012
Hometown: San Rafael

If you walk through Upper Sproul on Mondays, you’ve probably seen Mickey Davis working at The Local stand. What is the Local, you ask?  Ask Mickey and she’ll say,

“The Local is a weekly produce stand run by UC Berkeley students every Monday. Each Sunday, students from the ASUC Sustainability Team go the Temescal Farmer’s market, and buy surplus of whatever is in season from local farmers. Monday from 10 am to 2 pm, these students sell the fresh fruit and vegetables on Upper Sproul, right outside of MLK at the same bulk prices they paid the farmers. Not only does this help these family farms, but it also makes it convenient for the campus community to have access to the freshest, healthiest, most local, and most delicious food in the bay area!”

Her Campus: How did you get involved with The Local and how can others get involved?
Mickey Davis: I knew I wanted to be involved in the Local from Day 1! I had heard about them on Cal Day my senior year in High school! To get involved in the Local is easy. Just come out on a Monday to Upper Sproul between 9am and 2 pm and lend a hand!

HC: What else are you involved with on campus?
MD: I have been involved in a lot on campus throughout college; varsity cross-country and track and field, delta gamma sorority, and many more food and environment related groups like the Berkeley Student Food Collective, Sustainability Team, the Student Organic Gardening Association, and the Society for Agriculture and Food Ecology. Now I am teaching a DeCal called Berkeley in the Global Food System, Thursday nights in Evans. Anyone is welcome to audit lectures!
