Shanghai Tokyo Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

The College Park community got a new addition to its ethnic food selection when Shanghai Tokyo opened up under the University View last fall. Located on the ground floor of 8300 Baltimore Avenue, Suite 102, Shanghai Tokyo is an easily accessible place for students and employees looking for a quick lunch or dinner.

Shanghai Tokyo features an array of Japanese and Chinese cuisine, and could be eaten in the café or ordered for take out. Shanghai Tokyo offers a basic roll of sushi ranging from $3.00 to $5.25, with selections including a California roll, avocado roll, tuna roll, and Philly roll.

For just a few dollars more customers can get 8-10 pieces of sushi with choices including dragon roll, naruto roll, volcano roll, or crazy salmon roll. Even though it’s a quick fix, there is better quality sushi in the area that students can go to if they are looking for sushi worth their money.

However, their Chinese menu has reasonable prices and tastes pretty good for someone who is looking for a casual meal to hold them over during the day. Everyday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., anyone who comes in can get lunch specials including chicken with broccoli, beef with broccoli, or honey sesame chicken. They even have meals for vegetarians, offering a vegetable delight lunch special and all lunch specials come with a vegetable spring roll and white or brown rice.

For dinner they have heavier portions offering chicken, beef, shrimp, or salmon teriyaki for around 12 dollars. They also have many different brands of fried rice platters, lo mein, and signature dishes such as Kung Pao, Mongolian, and Szechuan.

Overall Shanghai Tokyo is a good place to go to get a cheap casual Chinese lunch or dinner. It’s pretty convenient for students in the University View/Varsity buildings looking for dinner and provides a lot of food for the price. While the sushi is subpar, it definitely isn’t a bad place to go to a quick fix for your Asian food craving!
