Singles Awareness Day: 14 Fun Things to Do February 14th

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

February 14. Valentine’s Day for those collegiettes™ blissfully in love and fortunate enough to have found that special someone. For the rest of us, however, it can be a bitter reminder of our “forever alone” status. However, if you’re alone this Tuesday, don’t let it be a day for sadness and sulking. Instead, take your life into your own hands and make the day awesome with these 14 awesome things to do on February 14!

  1. Bake Cookies

What’s the best way to make yourself feel better if you’re sad? Sugar! So whip out your cutest apron and hit up the kitchen with cookie dough and pink icing. Grab some friends and make it a baking party. If you’re not that handy with an oven, we won’t tell if you just take a spoon and eat the dough! Just make sure you share it with some good friends.

  1. Watch a Chick Flick
If the harsh reality of singletown is too much for you to handle, try escaping to the cinematic world of hot guys and happy endings. No matter the film, romantic comedies are always dependable for letting the pretty yet flawed main character end up with the sweet supportive guy in the end. Bring out the popcorn and gather your girlfriends and enjoy!

  1. Snuggle
Fact: Real women snuggle. You don’t need a man, just a snuggie and some best friends to get that warm and fuzzy feeling that you might otherwise be missing out on in life. I promise that this will make you feel better!

  1. Decorate Your Room

Being single doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun of pink hearts and glitter everywhere! Crafting can be therapeutic and fun, plus it will make you happier to have a lovely environment to spend your day in.

  1. Go to the Gym
Rather than sitting alone and eating chocolate all day — although we won’t fault you if that’s what you want to do — why not work to improve your health and fitness instead? February is the perfect time to get back on track for your New Year’s resolution of going to the gym everyday, so make today the day! Plus, you might just run into some equal single hotties working out at the gym (preferably shirtless).

  1. Get Some FroYo
Frozen nonfat deliciousness. What’s not to love?

  1. Write Love Notes

Okay, so you might not have a “Dear John” to write uber-romantic letters and confess his undying love to you. However, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have anyone you love in your life. Send a note to your mom telling her how much you love her. Make a cute heart card for your roommate telling her how much you appreciate her friendship. Or, leave a post-it note in the bathroom for a random stranger to find and get that warm and fuzzy feeling that we all love.

  1. Volunteer
Valentine’s Day is all about spreading the love, so share that love with your community! Volunteer at your local soup kitchen and the appreciative looks on people’s faces will give you more than enough love to last for a while. Plus, you’ll feel better about yourself knowing you did something productive with your life.

  1. Make Heart-Shaped Pizza
Everyone loves pizza, but rolling out the dough into heart shapes just makes it all the more fun! Plus each of your friends can make her own pizza with her own favorite toppings, so everyone is happy, plus you get to avoid the impossible crowds of any restaurant on Valentine’s Day.

  1. Make Money

While all the couples are out spending money buying lavish gifts for each other, you can be the smart collegiette who saves her money to buy a special treat later. Take advantage of everyone desperately trying to impress his or her significant other by selling candy, carnations or other goodies.

  1. Go to a Sporting Event
It may be February 14, but it’s still college basketball season! Take out all your frustration with all the super cute couples walking around by going to a game and cheering your head off! Bonus: Guys love sports, so maybe you’ll make some new friends at the game!

  1. Shop
There are few things better for cheering up a sad heart than retail therapy. Those super cute heels you’ve been lusting after for months? Go get them! Not only will you feel fabulous, but you can justify them based on the fact that you didn’t have to buy a gift for your boyfriend. Just be careful to pick on special item to splurge on and not go overboard.

  1. Have a Dance Party
Titles like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” should be the theme of this playlist. Be sure to dance like no one’s watching and scream the lyrics at the top of your lungs, and before long you’ll hardly be able to remember your single woes.

  1. Ask someone out!
Don’t depend on the guys to ask you out. Take control and ask out that cutie you’ve been crushing on for months! This is your Valentine’s Day, so do everything you can to make it as special as you want it to be.
