Single? You can still Love Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Okay, so maybe you are going to go see The Vow this week and eat a whole pint of ice cream and maybe
Facebook stalk your ex. But that isn’t your only option! February 14th doesn’t have to be a day of mourning for us single folk, love isn’t just for those in a relationship. Love yourself, love your friends, love your dog—whatever—just love, well, love!

Spread the love
Remember when you were ten and everyone in class had to get a Valentine’s card? Let’s bring that back. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a celebration between two people—celebrate everyone around you! Bake cookies for everyone in your 10-person seminar, bring cards to your group meeting or candy to your sorority. Not only will it take your mind off your single status, but all your other single friends will feel the love.

Love thyself
Don’t sulk around your dorm room being all “woe-is-me.” Get out and show yourself some love! Ben (or Jerry) is not your boyfriend, so put that tempting pint of Half Baked back in the freezer. Think a nice, relaxing day at the spa, getting mani-pedis with your bffs or hitting up the yoga studio. Maybe you still need to get started on some of your New Years resolutions? Why not start today. Instead of thinking of Valentine’s Day as just another reminder of how you don’t have a boyfriend, use the day to love yourself!

Day with the girls
So maybe you’re longing for a candle lit dinner, a walk on the beach or a little blue box. Make it a girls’ night! I’m not saying you have to buy your bff a Tiffany’s necklace for Valentine’s Day, but you can still take advantage of yummy restaurant specials and cute teddy bears. Go in on a Secret Valentine white elephant-esque swap or just go out to dinner to celebrate your fabulous, single life and laugh about the horrendous gifts you’ve received on Valentine’s Days past.

Make Valentine’s Day more about love, and less about having a boyfriend!
