Oh, Valentine’s Day, the day that singles love to hate and lovers love to love, why do you do this to us? Every February 14th, you come around and break our little hearts. I say NO to XOXO, and yes to single success. As my hall mate and friend, Diana Floegel, put it we need to rename the day, Single’s Awareness Day or S.A.D. My take on it is Single’s Appreciation Day, but hey they both work, right?! Don’t be ashamed of not having a boyfriend or girlfriend, my collegiette friends, because “You’re Beautiful It’s True”! So here are five things you can do to celebrate your Awesome Singleness.
1. Make an “Awesome Playlist” of singles-themed hits and jam out in the mirror. My suggestions: Just the Way you Are by Bruno Mars, Sexy and I know it by LMFAO, You’re a Jerk by New Boyz (if you’re really bitter about a break-up), and one of my all-time favorite Beyoncé hits, Single Ladies! Dancing around in the mirror can be very therapeutic so just DO IT!
2. Next, buy yourself something nice. As a single collegiette, you should appreciate yourself, and who says you can’t splurge on you! If you want that fabulous bag, buy it, and if you want those fabulous shoes, well at least try them on for size right?! You could even have a group gift and buy charm bracelets with a bunch of your friends that you can remember forever!
3. Go out and have fun with friends. You can always go clubbing or out to a nice restaurant with your friends! They will probably be more fun, and you don’t have to worry about ordering the smallest thing on the menu or skipping out on dessert as you might if you were on a date. At the end of the day, “girls (and guys) just wanna have fun!”
4. Or stay in and have fun with friends. Maybe you can cook a creative dinner with your coolest pals, and have like a movie night. Nothing like watching a romantic comedy with a group of your best buds! Make some popcorn, pop open some soda, dim the lights, and it would almost be like having a movie theater in your own house (or dorm room)! A game night could also be really great. It generally brings out the competitor in people and like Charlie Sheen said, there’s nothing like “winning!”
5. Remember you are beautiful in every single way! My last tip and probably the most important one is to remember that you are special! Just because you haven’t found that special guy or girl, doesn’t mean that you won’t find them. Also, it’s better to wait for the right person than to settle for the wrong person. This is why we have S.A.D., because we know there are hundreds of you beautiful people out there who just need some love and appreciation. So, my Her Campus S.A.D. participants, I want to wish you all the love in the world on February 14th. Do whatever makes you happy with the people that you love whether it be family or friends, and you will have a great Singles’ Awareness and Appreciation Day. Sending all the hugs and Hershey’s kisses, Happy S.A.D!
