Music to My Ears: A Set to Smile About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Enjoy the best time of the year with this week’s lineup!

I am in love with this time of year. We are on the brink of springtime and Mardi Gras is coming up in only a matter of weeks (Mardi Gras themed lineup coming ASAP). Alas, it seems like only yesterday I was posting about the chilly weather and the brutality of finals week. Hopefully the rain showers will die down soon so we can all enjoy this beautiful city and all that it has to offer in the next few months!

1) Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra)

Her Campus Tulane director/founder Cat Combs picked out this song! I
love how this Belgian artist brings back some of the musical styles of the American 1960s (and probably unintentionally). Gotye just recently made his way to the international stage with this hit, “Somebody That I Used To Know.” My prediction? We will be hearing a lot more of this artist in the months to follow.

2) We are Young (feat. Janelle Monae) – Fun.
You may remember that Janelle Monae came to Tulane last fall, and here she
is again! Truth be told, though, I had never even heard of the band ‘Fun.’ until
I stumbled upon this song.

Of course, I would never include a song in my
weekly lineup unless it was worth a listen, and “We are Young” definitely hits
the mark. Give it a try, this song will not disappoint.

3) Like a Prayer – Madonna
Here is my tribute to Madonna (and her amazing performance at the Super bowl last Sunday!). “Like a Prayer” may have been released 23 years ago, but there is no denying that this song was, is, and always will be amazing.

4) Drive By – Train

I feel like it has been forever since I have heard anything new from Train.
The band had won me over when they came out with “Hey, Soul Sister” back
in 2009, so now I am always eager to hear what new stuff they come out
with. “Drive By” has a high amount of energy and, at times, is very similar to
the style of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Either way, I love this song and I hope
you will too.

5) Bad Girls – M.I.A.

Yay for M.I.A! In word, this artist is brilliant and this song only adds to her amazing lists of songs she has created. The British singer is also an activist for anything related to human rights and if you just listen to the lyrics she creates, you’ll see why. Even the music video of “Bad Girls” (check it out on YouTube) has caused a stir, but for good reason. Girl power!
