An Open Letter to UMaine Drivers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

Hey, you. Look, I know you’re stressed. First exams start up this week, school is hitting a steady pace and the Superbowl is this Sunday. We are all feeling the pain. Maybe the stress has made you a little grumpy, like the time you threw a sub at poor Debbie in the Union. Maybe the stress has made you hog the elliptical for over forty minutes in the Rec Center. We all have little stress-fits, but what is becoming apparent is that the most common way to take out stress must be on the road.

Snow, for whatever reason, seems to be the trigger for UMaine drivers to believe that the rules of driving are invalid. It’s a free for all! Do us all a favor, put down your coffee and your middle finger, and relax. You see that grey Ford Focus in front of you? That driver didn’t schedule your exam tomorrow. They probably weren’t even one of the three hundred people taking up the cardio machines last night in the Rec. In fact, I would dare say that person driving in front of you is just as stressed as you are. Let go of the gas for just a second, ease up and for the love of all things snowy, let us all drive!

The next issue I would like to address in this open letter is parking. The snow, slush and freezing rain can make it a little hard to see the white lines. However, if the next car over is parked a foot in the other direction, align your vehicle! A little winter weather is nothing new in Maine! It baffles me that the snow turns even the most composed Collegiettes into savage wildebeests attempting to run every other car off the road!

Finally, about that stress level. There’s plenty of options to de-stress for your first exams. Hit up the Rec Center and run a few laps! Put down your seventh cup of coffee! Most of all, study hard and enjoy the weekends!
