This past summer, I had the opportunity to spend ten weeks with an awesome group of first and second graders as a camp counselor in Georgia. All in all, the things I saw during those weeks were inspiring and the kids, a joy to work with. Unfortunately, though, beneath the surface of some of these kid’s joyful veneer lay a past fraught with neglect and abuse. How someone could bring themselves to abuse a child was, is, and always will be beyond on me. The frank reality is though, abuse does occur. Thankfully, the lovely Kappa Deltas of William and Mary have recognized the problem and taken it upon themselves to do their part to stop this heinous crime by hosting a charity event called Campus Golf. That being said, their success is not entirely dependent on what they do, but rather what you choose to do to help stop child abuse. Molly Adair of the KD Campus Golf Planning Committee has provided some important details.
Â
What do the proceeds of campus golf go to?
“All of our proceeds go towards our philanthropies, Avalon and Prevent Child Abuse America. 20% go towards PCAA and 80% to the Avalon shelter in Williamsburg, which is especially wonderful because we have a personal relation to it. We can see exactly where the money goes and that’s overwhelmingly rewarding.”
Â
Are there any new or exciting changes this year to past campus golfs?
“We’ve made a few minor changes to this year (as tends to happen), but this year we really wantto focus on raising as much money for our philanthropies as possible. Though Campus Golf IS the most fun day of the year, we also want people to know that all that fun they’re having is paying off for others out there.”
Â
How would you describe campus golf to a freshman?
“Simply put, Campus Golf is the best day of your life! Teams of 4-5 people dress up, goof up and jam out while playing golf around campus and being caddied by Kappa Deltas. In the past we’ve had some incredible costumes – full blue-bodied na’vis straight out of Avatar, board games complete with working pieces, teams of bananas, oompa loompas, gnomes… and the list goes on. Think Halloween, but 50 times the creativity. Plus golf.”
Â
What are some of the logistical details i.e. date, time, place, cost?
“Campus Golf is Saturday, February 25th! The first tee-time is pending registration, but will most likely run from about 8 am to 5 pm. Check-in is in the Sunken Gardens (Crim Dell end). The most important things to remember is that registration begins with our pre-registration event at Qdoba on Thursday, February 9th from 5-8 pm! 20% of Qdoba’s profits that night will also go towards PCAA and Avalon. Plus if you register there, you’ll get your t-shirt on the spot! We also are enforcing a cap on how many teams can play this year, so get your registration in as early as possible! Regular registration begins the following Monday, February 13th and will go until Friday, February 17th (or whenever we fill the cap).”
As I said before, and Molly has made clear here: they need you. “They” not being me, or Molly, or the other KDs but the children of our community who have confronted the most sinister evils of our society and are now haunted by the damage. So join me, the Hercampus staff, and the KD’s on February 25th on the Sunken Garden for an epic round of golf that will do infinitely more for our community, as well as our future, than any round of putt-putt you have ever played. This is the most important Saturday of the year and I know where I will be spending it.Â
