OSU Receives Visit from Three Funny Men

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

On the night of Jan. 25, Ohio State students had the chance to relax and listen to some hilarious words of wisdom from three television comedy writers.

OUAB’s event “Funny Men- An Inside Look Into What Makes America Laugh” brought in Doug Ellin of HBO’s “Entourage”, Kenny Scwhartz of Fox’s “American Dad”, and David Javerbaum of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

According to Kayla Wood, Collaborative Events Committee Chair of OUAB, OSU Hillel applied to partner with the organization for a collaborative event, specifically looking to bring in someone from the show Entourage. Doug Ellin’s agent then informed her that there was an event available involving all three writers.

Wood felt those appearances would garner interest from students, based off of interest in past OUAB events.

“The students really seem to enjoy getting a behind the scenes look at their favorite shows and movies,” she said. “This was a unique event in that we had the opportunity to bring three creators from three different shows. Each show is great and unique in its own way.”

During the event, 250 students listened to the writers humorously discuss a variety of topics such as their backgrounds, previous writing experience, breaking into the business and the benefits of writing for comedy television.

That was followed by a Q&A session for the students, in which more funny and insightful answers were provided. (Then again, what else would you expect from comedy writers?)

In the end, Wood was pleased with the overall outcome of the event. “All three men were wonderful to work with and they were very happy with the turnout at Ohio State,” she commented.
