HC Suffolk: Campus Celebrity Jordan Sousa

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

Name:Jordan Sousa
Year:Class of 2015
Major:Graphic Design
Hometown: Bristol, RI

Last year Jordan Sousa woke up at 3 AM with two words stuck in his head, “Still Fresh.” A year later, he has formed a successful business from these two words. Jordan, a freshman graphic design major at Suffolk University has been designing and selling clothes through the company that he single-handedly created, called Still Fresh Clothing. He describes the style of his brand as “streetwear” for people with all different styles. The spectrum of Jordan’s customers ranges from guys who listen to hardcore music to people who listen to rap music. He even has local bands and rappers as loyal customers! Jordan would love to get celebrities such as Kanye West to rep his label, however he feel that “one kid who skates at a local skate park wearing my stuff or someone putting up a Still Fresh sticker on a stop sign is just as important as some celebrity who wears it.”

Still Fresh Clothing currently sells t-shirts and crewnecks on their website. However, Jordan’s adding more to the shop for Spring 2012. He is planning on introducing some great new products, such as hoodies and five panel hats! Still Fresh Clothing will start popping up in stores around Boston soon as well! “Still working out prices and stuff like that, but its exciting,” Jordan says.

Questions & Answers with Jordan Sousa-
Her Campus Suffolk (HCS) : What lead you to Suffolk University?
Jordan Sousa (JS):I love the city and I heard Suffolk had a great art program from a friend so I decided it would be a great place to go. I applied for early admission and got in. It was the only college I applied to but I knew it was where I wanted to go.

HCS: What do you do in your free time?
JS:I do a lot of designing for my company in my spare time. I’m always thinking of new stuff. I have a folder on my Mac with about 100 different t-shirt, hats, hoodies, and mockups. Most will probably never be released but it’s just fun. I also play guitar and skateboard. I used to make beats with Reason on my computer, too, but I lost interest in it to focus on guitar and Still Fresh.

HCS: When and why did you start your clothing company?
JS:About a year ago I woke up at 3 AM with the name (Still Fresh) in my head and wrote it down on a piece of paper. I couldn’t fall asleep so I decided to boot up Illustrator and start designing right then. Before Still Fresh I had another clothing company in the works that I would post designs on Tumblr but it never got off the ground. I just do it for fun. I could make zero profit off my clothing and I would still do it just because I enjoy it.

HCS: Who’s your favorite designer and what are your favorite stores to shop at?
JS:As an independent clothing designer I support most independent shops. I’m big into Dertbag Design, which is owned by Philip Post (He’s only 16!) and Death Precision Inc., which is also owned by a high school-aged kid. I think it’s good to support kids like that because they are the future of clothing. It’s also cool to see businesses like that grow. Besides those two I’m a big Johnny Cupcakes and Supreme fan.

HCS: Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
JS:Kids who do what they like and enjoy and say forget the rest. The kids who take their own path are the ones who make it in America. The only way to be successful is by standing out.

HCS: Where do you see yourself in 10 yrs.?
JS: Hopefully still doing this. If not, I’ll be working in some sort of Graphic Design field. I’d still like to stick with Still Fresh and live comfortably though.
