One of the quickest (and best) ways to learn about someone is to ask him or her about their taste in music. Especially on a date, this one question can really make or break how well you get along with someone. It’s important to know some basics, especially at SMU because of the many concerts Dallas has to offer.
Â
The genres are: pop, rock, alternative, techno, dubstep, country, jazz, R&B, hip hop/rap, and country.
Â
For those of you not from Texas, country music is kind of a big deal here. Between the Fort Worth and Houston rodeos and major country artist concerts here in Dallas, the country music business is alive and well not far from SMU. Top artists include: Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride and Luke Bryan. If you want to learn how to dance to these artist’s songs, Billy Bob’s offers free line dancing lessons Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m.
Â
In case you’re confused, dubstep is a type of electronic music originating in London in the late 1990s. Meant for dance, dubstep focuses on intense bass play. Skrillex, Skream, Avicii, Above & Beyond and We Are Scientist. Check out Nocturnal Festival, which features dubstep, dance and electronic music all night long in April near Austin, Texas.
Â
Rock is a genre everyone must know. There are many types of rock, but knowing the classics is vital. Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses, Boston, George Harrison, Eagles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors… the list can go on and on. This is a genre guys are typically experts in, so wow them with what you know. Making a Pandora playlist based on one or many of these artists can introduce you to a variety of fun, original music while you get ready to go out. Maybe they’ll make you dance a little, too!

Here’s a list of artists I’m currently listening to (including some older songs). Don’t be afraid to check out a song or artist you’ve never hear of!
