5 Tips for a New Year, New Semester, New YOU!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

Once again, its that time of year when New Year’s resolutions are formed.  Scales, diets and weight loss programs line the shelves of Target and the next season of The Biggest Loser has “conveniently” started.  After eating one too many cookies and pieces of pie over the break, a healthy new outlook in 2012 could be just what you need.  Here are my top five ways to feel rejuvenated with plenty of energy to start the semester off right.

1. “Eat the Rainbow, Taste the Rainbow”
No, I’m not talking about Skittles.  With spring around the corner, it is a great time to try and incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into your daily routine.  They are full of fiber and antioxidants that protect your body.  This doesn’t mean you have to go out and eat a stalk of celery- be creative!  Try reaching for a fresh fruit smoothie the next time the urge to snack sneaks up.  You could also load up your ham sandwich at lunch with lots of veggies like lettuce and tomatoes.

2. “Have It Your Way”
Fast food chains can be devious.  While many things on the menu are full of artery clogging saturated fats, there are some golden gems hidden within even the dollar menu.  That being said, whether it be fast food or a sit-down restaurant, don’t be afraid to ask for some customization.  When ordering a salad, always ask for dressing on the side.  The same goes at places such as Chipotle.  By asking the server to go light on the cheese on your burrito and to put the sour cream on the side, you are not only avoiding many excessive calories but also the inevitable Chipotle “food baby.”

3. “Just Do It”
Be brave and try the gym.  There are numerous classes there to appeal to everyone in addition to topnotch equipment.  Still hesitant?  Just go for a walk down to CW or bike ride around campus instead of tuning on the TV!  While tedious at times, exercise is vital to a healthy lifestyle.

4. “Got Milk?”
Milk and other dairy products are highly underrated.  They are chock full of protein to keep you full throughout the day.  For girls in particular, dairy products are also important because they contain the vital nutrient calcium, which helps strengthen bones.  For those of you who are lactose intolerant, soymilk or my personal favorite, vanilla almond milk are great alternatives.  So this semester, ask yourself one question: “got milk?”

5. “Frosted Flakes Are More Than Good, They’re GRRREAT!”
I can’t drive this point home hard enough.  EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST!  Breakfast is extremely important in revving your metabolism for the day.  Studies have shown that people who skip breakfast end of up eating loads more calories during the rest of the day because the body goes into starvation mode. The optimal breakfast is a balanced combo of complex carbohydrates and protein. My go to meal?  Two whole wheat waffles with peanut butter and banana slices.
