Secrets to Growing Rapunzel-Length Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Long, thick hair seems reserved for fairy princesses, and girls everywhere long for it. However, a definite answer on how to get these lustrous locks is hard to come by. The myths are endless: trimming hair to make it grow faster or special shampoos for thickness. It’s time to separate facts from fairytale fiction, so college girls everywhere can toss their long braids from the highest tower.

One very prevalent long hair myth is that trimming your hair regularly makes it grow longer and thicker. Hair stylist and owner of Salon Seven in Crest Hill, Ill., Julie Godeaux weighs in.

“The myth about frequent trims for long hair isn’t true,” said Godeaux. “Your hair grows from your roots, so trimming the ends doesn’t effect its growth. Most of my clients keep up with trimming every six to eight weeks to keep ends healthy, so hair doesn’t look scraggly when it does grow out.”

Another common myth is found in shampoos for long hair.

“Shampooing for longer hair just doesn’t work,” said Godeaux. “ I actually tell my clients to shampoo only every other day because too much shampoo can dry your hair out.  For thicker or better looking hair, it’s better not to shampoo frequently because the natural oils in your hair make it look shinier.”

One hair growth solution used by many is vitamins. Supplements containing Vitamin B are most frequently used because variants of Vitamin B contain melanin for hair color and niacin for blood circulation in the scalp.
“I know a lot of my clients take vitamins for longer and healthier hair, and it seems to work,” said Godeaux, who has worked in top Chicago area salons for over 10 years.

One well-kept Hollywood secret for longer hair is Viviscal, a dietary supplement to promote hair growth. Used by supermodels and actresses like Reese Witherspoon, Viviscal is a bit of a splurge, but for wannabe Rapunzels on a deadline, it is definitely an option. For college girls on a budget, prenatal vitamins are a less expensive option that also promotes hair growth.

Another thing to keep in mind when growing long and healthy hair is trying to cut down on heat styling. Excessive use of hair tools like straighteners and curling irons can dry out hair or lead to breakage – especially during the brutal Evanston winter.

These tips and tricks will ensure every girl is well prepared for the day when her long locks need to be used to rope in her Prince Charming.
