American Idol: Presidential Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Last week, the president won over female fans with a soulful tune—and this time we’re not talking about the Nuge. Last Thursday, at a fundraiser at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, President Barack Obama surprised the audience by singing a couple lines from Al Green’s song, “Let’s Stay Together.” Though the singing itself lasted only a few short but sweet seconds, it is certainly clear that Obama would at least make it past the first round of American Idol if it weren’t for the age restrictions. His sultry voice elicited many screams and cheers from the audience—and, judging by the sound on the video, many female fans.

Al Green performed at the concert, and Obama said he sampled the artist’s classic soul standard to show his appreciation. Obama’s impromptu performance worked in his favor – he raised over $3.1 million from his New York fundraisers that night.

Now we know that if Obama doesn’t win the next election, he will at least have more time to devote to an Al Green/Barack Obama collaboration album. (Which I would totally buy.)
