Never Sacrifice Fashion for Function: Late Winter Style Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Now that Penn has finally seen its first winter snow (Halloween definitely did not count!), Penn women can finally start indulging in some serious winter dressing.

Winter is fashion’s favorite season, and the reason why is pretty simple: outerwear is  much more fun than anything else. Huge coats, chunky knits, crazy hats, and cool boots are all what the fashion world lives for. Here are a few staples that will pull you happily through the coldest and slushiest of months.

1. There is no winter-dressing necessity more important than the neutral chunky sweater.  A basic top like this not only keeps you warm, but comes with endless styling options. It looks good with jeans and bundled under a coat, paired with leggings for an easy day and over your old high school flannels for a snowy day in your dorm room. You can dress this sweater up with a chunky crystal necklace or keep it simple with just a cozy scarf.

2. Speaking of cozy scarves, no accessory is more crucial for late winter than a huge infinity scarf.  These perfect loops of knit warmth can be worn long and loose for just a bit of comfort, or wrapped around the neck for maximum warmth. As a plus, they look trendy, so you don’t have to relegate your outerwear to just outside – keep this scarf on while you’re sitting in that drafty lecture hall!

3. This one is a bit of a given. Snow is pretty when it’s falling, and it’s so clean looking, but we all know that the same is not the case when you’re trudging to and from class through gross grayish slush.  Your regular rain boots should do the trick, but give them a winter upgrade by investing in some rain boot socks to keep you warm. Bonus points for battling the weather with faux fur, bright colors and fun prints.

4. No matter how ridiculous it looks, nothing will keep you warmer than a giant faux fur coat. One like this commands attention, while sort of screaming “Yeti”. But who cares? If you’re going to be dealing with the dreary weather, you may as well channel your inner diva and make like a mythical wintry beast.

5. The turband exists in the fashion world in a similarly mythical way. What is it? Do people actually wear that? Can I? Well, it’s a super cute way to keep your ears nice and toasty while making a fun fashion statement. People most definitely wear them, and you can too! If you’re still wary, head on over to Urban Outfitters and try on the billions of turbands they have on display. I guaranteed you’ll find one that changes your life. And, hey – if you’re feeling extra adventurous, try one in faux fur for a head-to-toe snow beast impersonation.

6. Now, back to the foot. Realistically, everyone should be lacing up their ugliest hiking boots to get themselves across the ice and snow. However, you don’t have to sacrifice form for function.  Look for a pair of rugged boots with excellent traction in cool colors. They’ll put a literal spring in your step – and you won’t have to worry about falling on your face.

7. Fashion has done so well by us. There is no greater update to the classic pea coat than a cape. They come in varying weights and degrees of shapelessness, so you can still personalize your look and not end up in a sea of cloth. A great cape is like a cocoon of warmth and immediately classes up any outfit you’re wearing. You won’t regret this purchase.

8. Finally, what every winter woman warrior needs – a great pair of aviators.  Winter is the time for huge sunglasses, because with the sun reflecting off of all the snow on the ground, it’s virtually impossible to see anything.  Plus, with your turband and faux fur coat, a stellar pair of sunglasses will complete your winter diva look.

When it gets ridiculously cold, it’s hard to remember that winter is the season fashion was made for. Don’t let the cold get you down – treat that wet and messy street like it’s your own personal catwalk!
