Want to relive some of 2011? Here are this year’s top ten most memorable moments:
1. The Royal Wedding
This event has to be my favorite event of the year. Though I was unable to watch the wedding live at 4 in the morning (thanks, calculus final), I was able to relive the magical wedding through my electronic best friend, DVR. Everything about the wedding, from Kate Middleton’s dress, her background of being a “normal person”
to becoming a princess, and the ceremony, was beautiful and one of the happiest moments of the year.
2. The Capturing of Osama bin Laden
On May 2nd, 2011, I was studying for finals in one of the business school classrooms. All of a sudden, all of us in the classroom heard that Osama has been captured and killed, and immediately stopped doing our work and ran to The Boot along with every other Tulane student to celebrate this day in history. College students around the nation rejoiced that there has finally been some justice served in honor of the horrors of September 11th.
3. The Casey Anthony Trial
I’m not a huge follower of murder trials, but I really followed this one. The most controversial part of the case, however, was the outcome. Many people are still in shock over the decision that Casey Anthony was not guilty of murdering her daughter, Caylee.
4. Kim Kardashian’s Wedding…and 72 Days Later Her Divorce
We all watched Kim’s Fairytale Wedding. We were all jealous of how perfectly planned and beautiful her wedding was. Not so jealous now, are we? At least try to make it last one year, Kim.
5. The Death of Steve Jobs
Everything people use now, Mac computers, iPhones, iPads, and iPods, were created by Steve Jobs. He is arguably one the most influential innovators of the past 20 years, and will forever be known for changing technology as we know it. The eulogy written by his sister was also an incredible thing to read, and shed light on the ingenious man Steve Jobs was.
6. Adele’s Rise to Stardom
While Adele became famous a few years ago, her fame truly skyrocketed during the year of 2011. Her new album, 23, opens the world to Adele’s pains, joys, and obviously, her jaw-dropping, absolutely stunning singing voice. Her singles, “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You” were some of the most played songs on the radio this year, and this is the year the world fell in love with Adele.
7. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Affair
One of the more disappointing moments of the year was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s affair. He had an illegitimate child with his housekeeper, who even accompanied Schwarzenegger and his now ex-wife, Maria Shriver, on vacations. The creepiest part? Maria Shriver and the housekeeper were pregnant at the same time- both with
Schwarzenegger’s babies.
8. Nickelodeon Replays All of Our Favorite 90’s Shows
When I heard Nickelodeon was going to do this, aka the best present you could ever give to a 90’s kid, I kind of freaked out. We all loved watching “Hey Arnold,” “All That,” “The Amanda Show,” and “Doug.” These shows will forever be classics in our hearts, and re-watching them is a great way to re-live our awesome 90’s moments.
9. The Green Bay Packers Win the Superbowl, The Boston Bruins Win the
Stanley Cup, The Dallas Maverics Win The NBA Championship, and the St. Louis Cardinals Win the World Series Sports championships are always an integral part of the year. For the four main sports (hockey, football, basketball, and baseball), the playoffs and finals are followed by millions of Americans, and are guaranteed to end in either giant celebrations, or endless tears. The most celebrated win this year would have to be the Dallas Mavericks, simply for the reason that everyone wanted to see LeBron James fail.
10. Occupy Wall Street…and Every Major American City
The phenomenon that began on Twitter, protesting social and economic inequality, led many to “occupy” the streets of the Financial District in Manhattan. This inspired others in several other cities to do the same. Since the protests, “occupy (insert any place you can think of)” has now become a common joke.
