The University of Vermont’s Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity chapter has been temporarily suspended after allegations that a survey was passed among brothers asking them who they would like to rape.
An anonymous student reported the survey to authorities over the weekend, resulting in the fraternity’s instant suspension. The survey reportedly contained a question that asked participants, “If you could rape anyone, who would it be?”
The national fraternity ordered the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter to cease operations pending an investigation by the campus police department.
Since news of the survey surfaced, there has been an outcry in the Burlington community. Women’s rights and equality organization FED UP Vermont rallied with a crowd of approximately 200 outside Bailey-Howe Library on the UVM campus Thursday.
The Virginia-based national chapter released a statement on their web site, admitting that they understand the seriousness of the situation and, “intend to be thorough in its investigation and take appropriate action to uphold the Fraternity’s values when that investigation is complete.”
UVM officials are asking anyone who has relevant information on the survey to report it to the authorities.
