Hidden Study Spots

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

You head to Weldon and surprise, surprise, every table on every floor has been taken. Don’t panic! There are many hidden places around campus – and London – that should have room for you to settle in for a marathon study sesh.

The Library

Yes, we just said Weldon was full. But this isn’t the only library on campus, nor is it the only library in town. Check out King’s, Brescia or even Huron’s libraries. On top of that, explore Western’s main campus libraries that get little to no use: Taylor is quite popular, but have you tried the Music library or even the Law library? How about the Seminary behind Kings? It has a huge library that nobody ever goes to. These are guaranteed study spots that will have a quiet place to hit the books. Can’t find a spot on Campus? Head to the London Library, with branches located in the Galleria Mall and on Dundas St.

A Coffee Shop

Starbucks (the closest being located in Masonville Mall and Chapters – but don’t forget aboutWharncliffe or downtown) isn’t the only place you can hide away. Try Coffee Culture downtown or anywhere with free Wi-Fi (McDonald’s anyone?). Chances are, as long as you’re ordering hot beverages to keep you going, they won’t mind you hanging out.

The University Community Center

The new student lounge just opened up on the main floor of the UCC where the old gymnasium used to be – as if you didn’t already know. It comes complete with a comfy lounge with chairs and tables. If you’re down for a change of scenery, try it out. There is also the lounge area on the second floor, fully equipped with power outlets, chairs and couches. Did I mention the restaurants? Grab a booth in The Spoke, order some food and start cramming for that exam. You may even run into a few classmates and form a study group.

Miscellaneous Spots on Campus

The cafeteria in Talbot College, the Grad Club in UC and the lounge in Health Sci are just a few
examples of creative places to study. How about an empty classroom? Many students take refuge in
this noise-friendly environment. Try the classrooms on floor 2 of Weldon or any of the unused spacesin University College or the Social Science building. Social Science is a great place to study; the second and first floors are equipped with tables, couches and outlets. Campus is a large place – there is likely to be at least one free classroom in each building.

Home

If all else fails, set up at your kitchen table rather than in your bedroom. Sure, you may have a desk, but your bed being a few feet away is all too tempting. Turn off the TV, clear away the clutter and create a quiet study space in the comfort of your own home.

Good luck, HerCampus readers!

Krystyna is in her fourth year at Western University, formerly the University of Western Ontario. She is majoring in Arts and Humanities, with a Specialization in the English Language and Literature. She hopes to pursue a career in teaching with a fallback on journalism. Fair warning, she is a bit of a grammar freak and as such is a trusted HerCampus Western Ontario editor. She loves fashion, literature, music and film - subjects which she also happens to enjoy writing about, so stay tuned. All in all, Krystyna is a proud member of the HerCampus community and she looks forward to writing for you.
Rida is a fourth year student at the University of Western Ontario and is extremely excited about the opportunity to bring Her Campus to London! She recently changed her major from Finance to English Literature after finally realizing what she wanted to do with her life. Having spent her whole life in the Middle East (Dubai and Saudi Arabia) Rida had no choice but to grow up a shopaholic! Having shifted from the desert to the great ice box that is Canada, she still finds it difficult to adjust to the freezing weather. In her spare time, Rida likes reading, watching way too many shows, stuffed crust pizza and,of course, shopping! Her aspirations are to one day live in Paris and be a writer for Vogue.
