How to Survive Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.
As the fall semester comes to a close, many students find themselves overwhelmed by everything that is piling up. The end of the semester brings papers, group projects, presentations, and tests…which all seem to come at once. Luckily, there are ways to get everything done all while maintaining your sanity!

– Make a To-Do List
Make a to-do list that includes everything for the last week of the semester. Check over all of your syllabi and even email or ask professors to confirm the dates for assignments and tests. Then, make a list of your final exam days and times. This will allow you to visualize when exams occur and when you will need to study. When you have made this to-do list, make a schedule of when items need to be completed and stick to it!

– Study, Study, Study
STUDY! Stick to the study habits that work for you. Exam time probably isn’t ideal for trying new study rituals that you saw online. Study for shorter periods of time. Don’t try to force it all into one sitting because you won’t retain that information. Also, study in a place that is comfortable for you. If you don’t like the library, don’t go. I study best at my desk, in my room, with John Mayer Pandora playing. I can’t focus any other way!

-Don’t Procrastinate
I know, I too am guilty of procrastinating, but it will only make things more stressful in the end. Facebook, Twitter, and blogging can all be difficult to refrain from, especially when we dread studying for that boring geology exam. There is a solution to the procrastination problem! It’s called Self Control, and it’s not just the mental kind! This application for computers allows you to block certain websites and mail servers for a predetermined amount of time. Need to study for an hour? Set your Self Control App to an hour..as simple as that! I personally use Self Control pretty frequently-if not, I wouldn’t get anything done!

-Make Time For Yourself
That’s right….in the midst of all the paper writing and group meetings, you need to make time for YOU. Whether it’s going to dinner with a friend, catching a favorite holiday movie on ABC Family, or soaking in a bubble bath, you need to take personal time. It will alleviate some stress and help you keep life in perspective! Hey, it’s not all about tests, papers, and presentations!

So remember ladies, you can do it! It will all be over soon.
