Haley Nelson, IU sophomore and journalism major, spends much of her time appearing or working behind the scenes of IU’s campus news show, Hoosier News Source. She enjoys both reporting and anchoring on-screen and serves as the program’s producer.
Every week Nelson and the IUSTV News Director hold a meeting in order to put the script together and give other students direction regarding their stories. Every Sunday, the day of filming, she wakes up early to set up the studio and control room.
Nelson enjoys being both in front of and behind the camera. Even though being producer is a lot of responsibility, she finds it just as exciting as anchoring or reporting on screen.
She began working with IUSTV (IU Student Television) in the first semester of her freshman year. She went to meetings and realized she was interested in on-air news reporting, and became more involved as time went on.
This is the perfect job for her: she is very curious about events going on at IU, and loves to talk to people and find out what they’re doing and why. She likes the technical aspects, being on air, and doing videography: the whole process!
This summer, she is studying abroad in London through the IU Journalism School, where she will intern and take a class about the history of British journalism. Although the plans have not yet been finalized, she will likely be interning at a TV station there! After graduation, she hopes to get a job as a reporter at a local TV station and work her way up from there.
