The Five Need-to-Know Nail Art Designs!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

As a collegiette there are a few certainties: partying with friends, shopping with the gal pals, big-time interviews, holiday celebrations and just getting a little funky sometimes. No matter the occasion, having a spot-on nail design is just as crucial to your style routine as hair, makeup, and rocking the right outfit can be.

“Party Like a Rock Star”: It’s time to get your pretty face out of those books and in the limelight of your college town. With these show-stoppin’ nails you’ll not only get compliments on your fab outfit, but these nails fish for compliments all on their own.

HOW TO:

  1. Pick out a bright color combination and paint on an angle
  2. Wait to dry and apply ONE coat of OPI Black Shatter nail polish
  3. Once dry apply a sheer coat of glitter nail polish, followed by a top coat

HOW TO:

“I’m a Big Girl Now”: You’ve spruced up your resume and toned down the make-up with the go-getter mindset ready for your big-league interview. When you’re dressed to impress, make sure to dress up your nails with this educated look called “newsprint nails.”

HOW TO:

1. Grab newspaper, rubbing alcohol and paint your nails a light grey or white
2. Once dry, dip nail into a small holder of rubbing alcohol for 5 seconds
3. Immediately press newspaper onto entire nail and hold for 15 seconds
4. Reveal newsprint design and let dry before applying top coat

“Under the Mistletoe”: With the holidays fast approaching, it’s hard to avoid the holiday zest college campuses express, even when home might only be a flight or hour long drive away. Embrace your holiday cheerfulness with these spirit fingers, decorated to light up your look.

HOW TO:

  1. Paint a sparkle tip (combine colors if needed) and clean for a straight line
  2. Use a precision nail polish to draw desired lines
  3. Use toothpick to dip into desired colors and paint dots
  4. Wait to dry and apply a top coat

“Stop and Stare”: If you can’t commit to one nail polish because it can’t match every outfit, then “Marbled Nails,” will solve all your fashion problems with this funky and personal design. I painted my friend’s nails in the picture shown and a man at a football tailgate told her, “I’d paint my nails like that if I were a woman. Nuff’ said? I think so.

HOW TO:

  1. Paint nails white and put pieces of tape around the nail
  2. Once dry, pick the colors you want to use (newer nail polish works best)
  3. Fill a glass of room temperature water and quickly drop 1 drop of each color of polish in right after the other and watch the polish expand out
  4. Quickly use a toothpick to make your own design on the surface
  5. Place taped finger onto the design and hold under water for 5 seconds
  6. With finger still underwater, use a toothpick to take away filmy nail polish left on surface.
  7. Take nail out of water and reveal design. Let dry and then remove the tape using a cotton swab to clean up any polish on skin.
  8. Once dry apply a top coat
