How to Give Back to the Community

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

The holiday season is among us and it is the most opportune time for giving! While the local streets are lined with magical snowflake lights and people shopping for items on their Christmas lists, there are still people in need all over the community. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to do your part and give back locally.

Volunteer

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is going on right now. It’s as easy as 1,2,3 to sign up to be a bell ringer for the holiday season! They also have plenty of volunteer opportunities available at their family store in Foscoe.

Are you an animal lover? Volunteer at the Watauga Humane Society and get your time in with those precious fur babies. They need love too!

There are an endless amount of volunteer opportunities in the High Country. Be sure to check the Appalachian website for all of the available opportunities.

Donate
As college students, it is safe to say we are all a little low on funds…but the change sitting on the dresser or in the car could add up and really help the local community. Every amount makes a difference. Drop off your change at one of the Salvation Army Red Kettle spots such as K-Mart or Wal-Mart until December 24 and do your part. Also, clothes and furniture can be given to Goodwill, The Hospitality House, Ram’s Rack, and Salvation Army.  In January, the Salvation Army holds a coat drive in the K-Mart parking lot to gather coats to give to the less fortunate- keep that in mind after the holiday season!

Toys for Tots provides new toys to children in need. Giving a child a toy is one of the easiest ways to bring joy to needy children in our community. Another way to bring joy is to donate your time. Visiting a nursing facility is a great way to bring holiday cheer to the elderly. I know, from experience, that visiting nursing facilities brings joy to those living there, as well as yourself. Something as simple as talking about what’s going on in the news or just playing cards can make someone’s day.

There are so many opportunities in our community to give back. Choose which one(s) best suits you and enjoy the satisfaction in knowing you did something that will help others rather than focusing on yourself!
