DePauw students are known for being hard partiers but even harder studiers. Thanksgiving Break is coming up, and for five short days we’ll finally be able to relax from the vicious cycle of DePauw life. If you’re like me, you’re probably not used to all that free time. But, we should take advantage of it! Luckily I’m here to share with you my top five things to do over breaks:
1. Spend time with high school friends
In high school, I had a tight knit group of friends. Unfortunately, none of us choose schools near each other. When we’re all home on break, we always make sure to spend at least one day with each other catching up. Just because we chose different schools doesn’t mean our friendship has to end. Reminisce on high school memories and rehash all your crazy days at DePauw with them. It’ll be as if you never left each other.
2. See a movie
During the school year I never have time to go to the movies. Ashley Square Cinema lacks in choices, and I rarely have time to spend the day in Plainfield to catch all the new releases. Once you return to civilization at home, you can finally catch all the movies out in time for the holidays. You can relive your childhood by seeing The Muppets or Happy Feet Two. Don’t forget the next part of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 1 will be out, and I know you’re looking for an excuse to gawk at Taylor Lautner’s rockin’ bod. Go ahead and splurge on a jumbo popcorn and candy to truly enjoy.
3. Catch up on TV shows
Even with Hulu, we collegiettes never have time to watch the newest episodes of all our favorite shows. So curl up on the sofa with a nice cup of tea and veg out to your favorite guilty pleasures. You finally won’t have to avoid all the spoilers of Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl, andGlee. But, if you still can’t find anything interesting to watch, why not try out some British television? They have some amazing teen dramas. Skins and Misfits are two to try. In addition, there are tons of holiday specials during Thanksgiving, and it’d be a sin to miss the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!
4. Sleep
The typical DePauw student does not get enough sleep, and that’s an understatement. Some of us have even forgotten how to do it. Over break you’ll finally have time to get your recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Take advantage of it. It’s not antisocial towards your family; it’s necessary for us to get our beauty sleep in time for finals! And speaking of finals…
5. Study
Finals start shortly after we get back from break. Make sure you’re prepared to get all As. Bring some books and class notes home with you to begin a brief review. It’ll ease your stress once you get back on campus to have a head start on the work overload. We didn’t rise to be number fifty on Forbe’s list of America’s Best Colleges by slacking off, so keep up the hard work!
