Three Must-Have Winter Accessories to Combat the Cold with Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

Although some of us may love the winter for its beautiful sparkling snowflakes, Christmas light madness and holiday sales there’s one big part of winter that can keep us girls content through the season.  If it wasn’t for the cold weather we wouldn’t be able to bask in the glorious fashion that winter accessories can add to our wardrobes.

Keeping up with cold weather accessories is key to staying cute into the bone chilling months of the New Jersey winter.  Not all winter accessories can be carried on from year to year so it’s important to know the trends of the season. (Think about it, Leopard might be back full force now, but chances are last winter you kept your leopard print scarf in the winter storage box where it belonged).

While most of us can’t afford a Burberry trench or a fox fur neck warmer on a college budget there’s an endless amount of options to keep up with the best trends for this winter, and considering the recent October snow fall getting your winter accessories ready is crucial.

Here are a few main trends you might want to consider adding to your closet!

Pocket Scarves
These scarves seem to be the trend that’s hitting the hardest this season with so many variations to choose from.   And no, I’m not talking about the little silk scarves men put in their lapels! I’m talking about taking your typical boring scarf and literally creating a pocket on both ends.
Sure the pockets might not be suitable for anything you don’t want to lose but who cares, they look fabulous.  Storage is what purses are for, not these cute pouches; however, they will come of some use in the occasion you forget your gloves at home.  Place your hands into the pockets and it’s an instant way to keep your hands warm.

A personal favorite of mine and my most recent purchase is an undeniably classic version of a pocket scarf.  The MICHAEL Michael Kors Fisherman Pocket Scarf will keep you warm and feeling great.   The long knit scarf has two button accents on each end that give the simple scarf a nice finishing touch.  I went for the cream since I love throwing in light neutrals and winter whites into my wardrobe as much as possible, but the black, chocolate or gray are just as cute.  At $58 this scarf is decently priced.  It’s useful with almost every outfit and will keep you warm!  Get it here at Zappos.com.

Hoods
Sometimes fashion and practicality don’t mix well, especially when it comes to winter fashion.  Pea coats, trench coats, leather jackets and cozy ponchos don’t have always hoods to keep the chill away from our heads and for girls who don’t find themselves too fond of earmuffs the cold can get unbearable. But despite that there’s no denying most girls would rather have a gorgeous hoodless coat than an average looking one with a warm hood.

If you fall into the above category you might want to shop for a hood. This is one of the most practical and appealing trends for combating the frost of this season.  How can you complain about a piece that gives you the best of both worlds?  You can wear your favorite hoodless pea coat and simply add a trendy hood to keep your neck and head warm.

A great and inexpensive hood option is Echo’s Chunky Knit Loop Hoodie.  The hood falls at the collar bone in the front and covers the back of the neck to keep you extra warm.  All four great colors are available on sale for $33.60 at Bloomingdales.com.

The Black Solid and Camel Heather (dark cream colored) are attractive solids that will fit into your wardrobe easily.  For a look that will stand out a bit more check out the Black Multi and Coffee Multi. The Black Multi combines shades of black, gray and white and has a solid black hood rim.  The Coffee Multi combines hues of chocolate and light brown with a solid deep purple hood rim.  If you prefer a less chunky hood take a look at theMICAEL Michael Kors Fisherman Stitch Hood for $88.

Bold Colored Gloves and Scarves
Winter no longer means sticking completely to dark and neutral colors (unless you want to risk depression).  It is okay to dress in bold colors, especially when it comes to scarves and gloves! This winter bold colors are not so much an option but a necessity, especially bold blues, greens and reds.  Adding a bold colored scarf or a pair of cute red gloves lets you stand out even when you’re wearing jeans and a tee.  Not to mention, color makes the world just a little happier so get on this trend ASAP! Shopping around is usually the best way to find low-priced scarves and gloves but if you’re more of an online shopper check out this red solid cashmere scarf at on sale at Nordstrom for $69.90.
