Meet Rachel Walsh!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

You may not know this, but this upcoming week (Sunday, November 6th through Saturday, November 12th) is Paint the Campus Purple Week, during which Relay for Life of Kenyon attempts to raise cancer awareness around campus! So, we at HC Kenyon thought it would be appropriate to interview none other than the Co-Chair of Relay for Life at Kenyon herself, Rachel Walsh!

Year: 2012
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Ann Arbor, MI (GO BLUE!)

HC Kenyon: What activities are you involved in on campus?
Rachel: Chair of Housing and Dining, Event Co-chair for Relay For Life, Community Advisor for Taft Cottages, and Theta Delta Phi.

HC Kenyon: What is the activity you feel most passionate about? What gets you motivated?
Rachel: I am very passionate about Relay For Life.  Cancer has had a significant impact on my life, particularly during my college year and this is my way of fighting back.  What really motivates me is working with people who are also passionate about whatever we are working on.
HC Kenyon: Every superhero has a secret weapon…what would you say is your secret to success as an active member of so many groups on campus?
Rachel: I am passionate about all the activities I partake in and I can work well with many different types of people. Also, I make to-do lists and take efficient study breaks…and lots of them.

HC Kenyon: Favorite guilty pleasure TV show/movie and why? (If it helps you answer, lately mine has been “Felicity” because of Felicity’s sheer awkwardness. And it’s from the 90s, enough said)
Rachel: Say Yes to the Dress. There are…all types of people in this world.

HC Kenyon: Deli or Middle Ground? Defend your position.
Rachel: This one’s complicated. Deli for breakfast and sandwiches. My grandfather owned a series of wholesale meat markets and worked very closely with the deli business in Detroit.  Delis just have a special place in my heart.  Middle Ground for soup and coffee. Soup is definitely my favorite food and Middle Ground’s soups are some of the best.

HC Kenyon: We’ve all had embarrassing moments at Kenyon…describe your favorite embarrassing moment (or most mortifying, whichever’s better) that you’ve had during your time at Kenyon College.
Rachel: December of freshman year I was walking out of Peirce with a friend.  There was no ice or snow yet somehow I still managed to trip over myself and split open my knee.  There were two upperclassmen walking in front of me who turned around at the sound of my fall.  As they turned around I tried to get up but fell again.  They looked at me for what felt like five minutes and scoffed “freshman,” and kept walking.

HC Kenyon: As chair of the housing and dining committee, give us the lowdown: what’s the meal you love to hate at Peirce (aka that you know it’s weird and that most people hate on it but you secretly might sort of like).
Rachel: Breadsticks (hey, admit they’re delicious).

HC Kenyon: Favorite annual themed party?
Rachel: Middle School Dance Party.

HC Kenyon: Least favorite annual themed party?
Rachel: I like to party!

HC Kenyon: Plans for after graduation?
Rachel: Hahahaha…

HC Kenyon: Any other fun facts you’d like to make Kenyon College aware of?
Rachel: My high school’s mascot was a rainbow zebra…

Ally Bruschi is a senior political science major at Kenyon College. She spent this past summer interning as a writer with both The Daily Meal, a digital media group  dedicated to "all things food and drink" and The Borgen Project, a non-profit organization that partners with U.S. policymakers to alleviate global poverty. Before entering the "real world" of jobs, however, Ally spent many summers as a counselor at an all-girls summer camp in Vermont, aka the most wonderful place on earth. A good book, a jar of peanut butter, a well-crafted Spotify playlist, and a lazy dog could get her through even the worst of days.
