Falling in love is the biggest risk we take. It’s that one moment after the first kiss, the first date, the first time someone has ever made you feel completely alive when you make a decision; you either let yourself fall or you hold yourself back. For those of you that have never had your heart broken, maybe you’ve always held yourself back; maybe the person worth risking everything for hasn’t come along yet; maybe that image in the back of your mind of being hurt and betrayed has kept you from jumping in head-first.
I might be a hopeless romantic; but I say, if given the chance, go for it. Let yourself fall in love. Let yourself be happy no matter what the consequences may be in the end–it’s worth it. In lives that are so short, those moments of love and joy and the things you learn about yourself along the way are worth the tears and pain you may feel later on. It’s just all part of the journey—you love and you lose (maybe a few more times than you’d like). Then one day, everything works out the way it should. Like Tennyson said, “Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”
It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be really scary—especially if you’ve had your heart broken before. You could end up devastated and may have to fight to get back on your feet. You know that you’re only in college and this could very possibly not work, but then again, maybe it could. Maybe it will end in heartbreak, but maybe it will lead to happiness or something better in the future. You could be scared, cautious, hold back, take the easy way out; but you’ll regret it if you do.
If you do find love, you’re the luckiest person in the world; and if it hurts instead, let it hurt. Let it hurt because that’s how you know it was real. Every day it’ll hurt just a little bit less until one day you choose not to hurt anymore. You go on with your life and reflect on how you’ve grown; but no matter what, you can’t give up. Whether it lasts in love or it hurts instead, it’s all part of our journey to a happiness we may not find another way.
