Weekend Getaways to Blow Off the Midterm Steam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

College Park is a typical college town, with a great mix of nightlife ranging from bars to house parties to excursions in D.C. As much fun as College Park is, it is also relaxing to take a weekend getaway to de-stress and have some fun outside of CP with some of your favorite girlfriends. Here are three great places to spend a weekend forgetting about all your schoolwork and enjoying a fun weekend!

Rehoboth Beach, Del. is a resort beach town 2.5 hours away from College Park. Even though it is fall and it’s not ideal to go sun tanning or go in the water, it is a shopaholic’s haven. Even though there is some shopping in Chinatown and Bethesda, there aren’t any outlet stores in the area that are close by that appeal to everyone. (Photo credit to Cassidy Sterling)

In Rehoboth Beach, Tanger Outlets has three different shopping outlets featuring over 100 apparel, accessories, footwear, and homeware stores. Some of the top apparel stores that appeals to college girls at the outlets include Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Crew, Coach Factory, Hollister, Charlotte Russe, PacSun and many more that has awesome, cheap prices.

A second place for a perfect weekend getaway is Deep Creek; a small town located 3 hours away in Garrett County, Md. If you are an outdoorsy person, Deep Creek is a great place for you and your friends! In late fall and winter, Deep Creek is popular for hiking, skiing/snowboarding, riding ATVS, and horseback riding. Cold weather comes early in the Alleghany Mountains, getting an average of over 100 inches of snow every year.

Right outside of Deep Creek in McHenry, Md., there is Wisp Ski Resort, the top ski resort in Maryland. This is perfect for people who love skiing and snowboarding. It opens Nov. 25th for any snow lovers who are itching to hit the slopes. For all the hikers, there is Deep Creek State Park, which offers a mile long trail on the shoreline of the lake, trails of 2-3 miles, and trails of 5-6 miles. (Photo credit to Lisa Tucker)

The third getaway that everyone loves is “The Big Apple” or New York City. New York City is just under 4 hours away and offers every possible activity. There is everything ranging from sightseeing to Central Park to ice-skating in Rockefeller Center. If you like sightseeing, New York has some of the most famous landmarks in the country worth seeing including Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. (Photo credit to Cassidy Sterling)

If you’re more of a shopper there are so many different attractions you won’t find in other cities. Some include the Toys “R” Us in Times Square, which has a ferris wheel and a 4,000 square-foot Barbie dollhouse, the 25,000 square foot M&M’s World in Times Square, and the Apple Store on 5th Avenue. It is also known around the world for its Broadway scene. Some top shows planning this fall on Broadway include the classic Lion King, Jersey Boys, and Wicked.
