10 Internships You Can Apply For Right Now (& the deadlines are coming up!)

Chances are, you’ve probably heard the hype about the competitive job market. When beginning the ever-demanding job search, having relevant experience is key. In addition to impressive grades and glowing recommendations, internships can add polish to your resume. But these days, internships are no longer just extras; in fact, they’re necessities. There are a ton of opportunities out there, but they’re often hard to track down. It’s tough to stay up-to-date on the application processes, and many of us find out about deadlines after it’s too late.
 
Lucky for you, we’ve done the hard part and gathered a list of internships that you can apply for right now! Some of them have late fall or winter deadlines, and others have rolling admission. 1.  ASME (American Society of Magazine Editors) Magazine Internship Program
Who: Students who have completed their junior year of college by June 2012. Only full-time students with a grade point average of at least 3.0 will be considered.
Where: New York or Washington, D.C.
Deadline: December 1, 2011
About: The Magazine Internship Program is a 10-week program for rising college seniors at magazines in New York and Washington. ASME interns report, edit, fact-check and copy-edit for print and online publications. They may sometimes interview celebrities, attend press conferences and work the red carpet. But most of the summer they do the un-glam but essential work of magazine journalism.

Applicants must fill out an application form, send a letter of recommendation, and include clips. There is also a $25 processing fee.
 

2. Bank of America Summer 2012 Internship
Who: Undergraduate or graduate students with at least a 3.0.
Where: Several different U.S. cities and three locations in Canada
Deadline: Mid-February
About: The Bank of America internship program offers paid compensation and opportunities for networking, professional development, and mentoring throughout the work cycle.

3.  Disney College Program
Who: All college students who have completed at least one semester
Where: Anaheim, California or Orlando, Florida
Deadline: Disney is currently accepting applications for their spring program (January – early May)
About:  Participants have the opportunity to explore potential interests while advancing their educations and earning a salary. This program allows students to network, take personal development classes, and strengthen their leadership and communication skills. Interns work in various positions at one of the Disney theme parks and housing is available close by.

4.  ESPN International Production Spring 2012 Internship
Who: Students who are currently enrolled and in good academic standing. You should also be available for employment within 12 months of the internship, and interns should have a graduation date of May 2012, August 2012 or December 2012.
Where: Bristol, Connecticut
Deadline: Rolling admission
About: Interns will prepare and edit various pre-production elements such as video clips, highlights, teases and features for use in live and taped events. Other duties include conducting research and establishing relationships with other networks.

5.  Every Day with Rachel Ray Spring 2012 Magazine Internship
Who: All college students
Where: New York City
Deadline: Rolling admission
About: Interns will be responsible for helping with product pages in addition to managing the product closet, calling in samples, styling merchandise meetings and some caption writing. They will also help perform research and may be assigned small writing assignments.

6.  HSN Magazine Internship Program
Who: Juniors or seniors earning a bachelor’s degree program related to business or marketing.
Where: St. Petersburg, Florida
Deadline: Rolling admission
About: Interns will utilize social media platforms while learning effective strategies and other on-the-job skills. Duties include helping the company drive traffic to their website, building the HSN brand and supporting promotions. Work is unpaid, but college credit is provided.

7.  New York Times Spring 2012 Internship
Who: All college students (preferred candidates have a demonstrated interest in journalism, including previous internships at daily newspapers).
Where: New York
Deadline: December 2011
About: Students work with reporters and editors, learning all about how a newsroom operates. Interns get to observe news events, assist with blogs and have their work critiqued by New York Times staffers.
To Apply: Fill out the application and submit it with a resume, two letters of recommendation, six newspaper or online clips, or both, and a letter outlining what you hope to learn from the internship. See here for more information. 
 
8.  San Francisco Film Society Publicity Internship
Who: All college students
Where: San Francisco
Deadline: Rolling admission
About: Interns work underthe supervision of the director of publicity. They learn how the department operates by creating publicity campaigns for the San Francisco International Film Festival. Responsibilities include conducting media research, contacting press, gathering and organizing materials for film programs, and maintaining publicity files. Interns work at least 12 hours (preferably two days) a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. The internship is unpaid, but benefits include the opportunity to attend press and preview screenings, college credit, and hands-on experience working with filmmakers and publicizing films.

9.  Southwest Airlines Summer 2012 Internship
Who: Full-time college students (enrolled in at least 12 hours during the semester prior to the internship). Most positions require junior standing, but some positions allow sophomores to apply.
Where: Dallas, Texas
Deadline: To be determined (usually mid-late December)
About: Internships are offered in several departments, including marketing, accounting, management, and training development (and many more). All positions are paid and include travel if available. Interns gain hands-on experience while working alongside professionals in their respective fields.

10.  The White House Internship Program
Who: College students who are U.S. citizens
Where: Washington D.C.
Deadline: January 22, 2012
About: Interns work in different departments throughout the program, but come together to participate in group activities. Together, they complete a service project to help the community and promote leadership. Each week, interns gather for a speaker series with senior staff members and take advantage of off-site field trips around D.C.
