Just 72 days since Kim Kardashian walked down the aisle with her NBA star hubby Kris Humphries, the celebrity newlyweds are already filing for divorce.
The news comes just after the tabloids have been reporting on Kim and Kris’ apparent lack of marital bliss. Kim and Kris married on August 20 in California in a lavish $10 million wedding ceremony in front of friends, family and E! cameras. “The dresses were so gorgeous, and watching those beautiful girls walk down the aisle … they are absolutely stunning,” guest Julianne Hough said to MTV News after the ceremony. “To just see them walking down the aisle was just beautiful. And then little Mason, Kourtney’s little boy, he kind of stole the show.”
Up until this point, the two have been fighting rumors that their marriage was on the rocks. But Ryan Secreast, who produces the reality star’s E! shows, confirmed the news this morning in a tweet, “Yes @kimkardashian is filing for divorce this morning. I touched base with her, getting a statement in just a few min.”
Kim later released an official statement to E! News, saying, “After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.” She has since hired celebrity lawyer Laura Wasser and will cite the usual “irreconcilable differences,” TMZ reports. The date of separation will be listed as today, Oct. 31, 2011.
There were – in retrospect – not-so suprising signs that their marriage would be short-lived from public squabbles in front of the paparazzi to the visible tension between the two newlyweds on the televised E! special right up until the night before their wedding.
After their highly-publicized ceremony and honeymoon, Kardashian said that living in New York City with her sister Kourtney, her boyfriend Scott Disick and their baby was “not ideal” for newlywed life. “Something I really prepared Kris for [was] to let him know that no matter what we do, there’s going to be rumors,” she told PEOPLE. “It used to really upset me and now I don’t even think about it.”
The newlyweds have faced a lot of criticism with critics saying that their marriage was a scam or a publicity stunt. Aside from the money that the wedding itself brought in from E! and other endorsements, Kim and Kris earned $90,000 from selling their honeymoon photos, $100,000 from photos of them dating and another $200,000 from Kim’s 31st birthday bash at the Marquee night club in Las Vegas, according to Hollywoodlife.
You can catch the first few months of Kris and Kim’s marriage on the second season of Kourtney & Kim Take New York, which kicks off on November 27.
Admittedly, 72 days is giving it a good run in Hollywood as far as marriages go (remember Britney Spears and her Las Vegas wedding with childhood friend Jason Alexander? That lasted 55 hours!), and not too many people are shocked by this news. What do you think of the Kim & Kris split, collegiettes™?
