A Guide to Cal Guys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Berkeley, a place where the amount of studying you have to do is large and the pool of good guys is small. So where and how are girls supposed to snag a good catch? Don’t worry, because here at HC we have developed the ultimate guide to meeting and getting a guy.  Keeping the guy, on the other hand, is best left for another article.

Northside

Let’s start on Northside. This is where a majority of grad students choose to live, so the pool you’re dealing with is composed of a more mature group of men. Northside is also where engineers and math majors have most of their classes. So tailor your approach to maturity and smarts. We suggest dressing conservatively, being modest, and showing how intelligent you are. What’s a good pick-up line for the Northside guy? Why not try suggesting grabbing a cup of coffee at Brewed Awakening or a sandwich at the Stuffed Inn and discussing your classes.

Southside

Now we’ll move on down to Southside. Southside boys are a completely different species from Northside. The majority of the guys that you will find down here are typical frat boys. The frat boy is a very visually oriented creature and appreciates someone that knows how to have a good amount of fun without going overboard.  The con about going for the frat boy is that for every one guy in the frat there are 20+ girls vying for his attention. This is why we suggest wearing your hottest outfit, walking with confidence, and slapping a gorgeous, flirty smile on your face. What pick up line should you use? How about, “hey, do you know where I could find a drink?” Using this line doesn’t actually mean you have to drink. It just gives you an excuse to break the ice and buys you some time with him since he has to show you where it is.

Bars

Next, for the 21-year-olds are the bars. The bars attract an older, yet not too mature crowd. We would probably put these guys in between the Northside guy and the Southside guy. They like to have fun but still have some level of intelligence and older age—most of the time. Bars are an easier venue than frats to flirt since the girl to guy ratio is a bit more even.  This means you don’t have to pull out your flashy outfits to attract a guy. The best outfit to wear is something you feel comfortable and cute in. The best line to use is asking the guy if he’d like to get a drink with you. Then offer to pay for it. This shows that you’re a fun-loving gal that is also independent and pretty interested in him. What’s hotter than that?

RSF

Finally we suggest checking out Cal’s Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), or any gym in the area. Here you will find athletic guys that care about their fitness and have some pretty hot bods–yum! It’s also the perfect place to show off your sexy curves in those workout shorts. The best thing to do at the gym is to focus on your workout instead of the guys (we know how hard this can be). This sends the message that you are serious about your health. Guys will be sure to notice you on the elliptical and once you’ve locked eyes with the guy doing squats, it’s time to go over and ask him how a certain piece of equipment works. This way you’ll be able to talk with him while you show off your toned arms. He won’t be able to resist.

Our plan might not be fool-proof, but we do know that the best way to grab a guy’s attention is by being you! You’re fabulous and your confidence will be sure to grab any guy’s attention.
