We all know that one person in class that’s you’ve labeled the “teacher’s pet”. This is the person that answers EVERY question and has a great connection with the professor, and inevitably you will develop a pang of jealousy of them. Well in order to get what you want, you sometimes have to kiss up (my brother has appropriately nick-named me Kiss-Up Kristin). For those of you who don’t like the term “kiss up,” well then perhaps calling it overzealous networking will make you feel better, but here are some ways to be noticed by your professor and possibly boost your grade!
1. Pay attention in class – I know we all like to go on Facebook, Twitter, HerCampus.com, etc. during class, but by showing the you are engaged in class and lecture will let your professor know that you are interested and you care.
2. Be prepared – Probably another given, but come with all essential items needed for class including homework, notes, readings, etc…(Besides, you can’t be taken seriously as a kiss up if you haven’t even done the basics like HOMEWORK!)
3. Try to speak up in every class – even if you don’t understand what is going on, just simply asking a question and/or an elaboration on the subject will signal the professor that you are interested in the subject.
4. Office Hours- Use office hours to your advantage! Go talk to your professor and expand on your lectures and ideas in class! He or she will definitely take notice and be amazed that you took the time to come to their office.
5. Find real life applications – If you are talking about a certain subject in class, look for TV clips or songs that deal with current discussions. Your professor will be thrilled at your commitment to the class and they may possibly show it to the class earning you MAJOR points!
6. Random compliments – Randomly tell your professor how much you enjoy their class or how much you appreciate them! Everyone needs a little confidence boost, and it will definitely brighten his or her day!
7. Send an e-mail – if you can’t get a chance to randomly compliment your professor, send him or her an e-mail and that will also brighten their day!
8. DON’T go overboard-– as an “expert kiss-up,” take it from me – don’t do all of these things at once! But always be prepared for class and pay attention, but most importantly introduce yourself to your professor! Just by knowing your name, your professor will most likely remember you!
