So fresh and so clean, clean: the words that epitomize this coming season’s basketball team. With 11 new players, 9 of which are freshmen, the team has the fresh meat they need to bring the Eagles a successful season full of energy and fire. All of the players have been working extremely hard on and off the court, getting themselves ready to bring the heat when November rolls around. The weather may be getting colder when the first tip off against UNH happens, but the team will just be getting warmed up!
After losing key players from last year, Reggie Jackson (now in the NBA draft!), Biko Paris, Joe Trapani, and Corey Raji, it will be interesting to see how the new team turns out. Offensively speaking, the team has learned to be quick on their feet and share the ball. In terms of defense, “we will be hard-nosed, diving for loose balls and taking charges” says Coach Donahue. Despite all of the fresh faces, the new team still poses a threat to the rest of the ACC, with Oregon transfer, Matt Humphrey, and returners, Danny Rubin (BC’14), and Gabe Moton (BC’14) on the court. Being only one of four returning players and the oldest player returning to the team, senior Peter Rehnquist, says, “it’s necessary for the freshmen to step up their games quickly.” He feels it is his, along with the other vets, responsibility to help get these new freshmen to work hard and develop a sense of cohesion on and off the court.
Freshman Eddie Odio feels like “having so many other freshmen on the team has made the transition to BC so much easier. Coach Donahue and the rest of the coaching staff have been a blessing and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” Izzi Metz, Coach Donahue’s former assistant coach from Cornell, has also joined the Eagles’ basketball staff. They all are approaching this season with tons of excitement and enthusiasm to see what this new team is capable of. The Eagles look forward to showing up those who underestimated this year’s team and prove they are a force to be reckoned with.
When asking Superfans what the best part of BC basketball games are, they said the energy that radiates through a packed Conte Forum. “We will make Conte Forum the hardest place to play in the ACC,” responds Rehnquist. Superfan and Her Campus BC Campus Cutie, Brendan Howard (BC’12), recalls that his favorite moment was when BC beat Duke back in 2009. “The stadium was unbelievably loud and the student sections stormed the court after the game. It’d be great to see that kind of excitement for every game. The basketball games really are a great time. I think a lot of the student body just hasn’t given them a chance.” See, Superfans! This is YOUR TEAM and you need to be a part of it! Be sure to get your season tickets and show the ACC what Superfans are all about.
