A Cup of Tia: Good Eats on the Cheap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

It was one of the last beautiful and sunny days of the fall. I slipped on my Toms shoes and walked out into the 80-degree weather. Fortunately, I’m one of the lucky ones to have Mondays off from school. My mom was here visiting for the day and I had a craving for Thai food so we drove over to New Haven in search of a place to eat. Parking is a little difficult to find but once you have it you just have to fill the meter with a dollar or two and start exploring!

I got a new phone this weekend with Internet so any chance I get I try to use it to find places to go. It led us to
Bangkok Garden, a Thai restaurant at 172 York Street. As I looked into the window I saw the plethora of Zagat and Advocate awards on display so we decided to try it. We were seated in a nice sunroom where we could people watch, one of my favorite things to do. I was surprised when the menu was placed into my hand and all of the lunches were under $8. Always a plus when you’re a college student paying so much to go to Quinnipiac!

We were given a choice of 2 dumplings, shrimp shumai, crab Rangoon and others to start off our meal. The Crab Rangoon was delicious; it wasn’t greasy at all but very light and fluffy. The shrimp shumai were large and flavor filled. Our food came out quickly and the large portion of my vegetable fried rice surprised me. It was so good and I even had leftovers to take home, yum! It was a nice thing to see that the people running the restaurant were from Thailand so you know it’s authentic and not another Chinese restaurant trying to make itself look “fancy”. If you’re looking for some good Thai food on the cheap, Bangkok Garden is the place to go.

Happy Eating! <3 T
