Being sick at school is miserable. Without a parent to coddle you or a best friend in 9 a.m. Biology to take your notes, you can feel a little overwhelmed.
This is where I found myself on a recent Tuesday morning–sick, sniffly, and alone in my room with just a box of tissues and a TV to comfort me. Luckily, I found salvation in a group of ten movies that I lean on like a group of old friends. These feel-good flicks are bound to pick-up even the most tired and stuffed-up collegiette.
- Tangled
This sing-a-long favorite is now on Netflix Instant Play. It’s like the Netflix Gods have finally answered our Disney prayers.
-
10 Things I Hate About You
Heath Ledger? Check. Sappy Shakespeare-inspired plot? Check. 18-year-old Joseph Gordon Levitt? Check. It truly is greater than chicken noodle soup.
- TIMER
This movie is also on Instant Play. At first you’ll be weirded out that the cute guy from Stick It is in it, but the quirky plot is too good to pass up.
- Drop Dead Gorgeous
My friend from home and I swear by this movie. It has more quotable lines than Anchorman and The Hangover combined. You will awkwardly laugh by yourself throughout the entire movie, guaranteed.
- Howl’s Moving Castle
My best friend is a film major at NYU, so when she tells me to watch movies, I’m always scared they’ll be completely over my head. She told me to watch this Hayao Miyazaki classic and I am eternally grateful. The plot is childish and adorable, but the graphics are so complex and beautiful that you’ll feel a little bit more cultured for watching it. It’s definitely a sick day favorite (did I mention it’s on Instant Play, too?).
- Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging
Judge me all you want, but this movie is amazing. Combine awkward kissing scenes, a Hugh Grant poster, and British accents and you’ve got sick day cinematic gold. This movie will remind you that no matter how bad you feel, there’s always somebody out there feeling a little bit worse.
- The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
Here’s another one on Instant Play! This sassy, southern movie explores the familiar and fun realm of female friendships (no unnecessary alliteration intended).
- Insidious
I’m a sucker for scary movies. There’s no way to describe the plot here other than ghosts, creepy and awesome. If Insidious isn’t your cup of Chamomile with lemon and honey, try Cry Wolf, The Strangers, The Others or Scream 4 (one of the funnier scary movies).
- The Princess Bride
This movie is about a kid who is stuck in bed with a cold; could it be anymore perfect? I actually had to buy this one through iTunes so I’d have it on my computer at all times. It’s cheerful and adventurous–the perfect combo for sick day blues.
- Bride and Prejudice
This is not a typo–I swear! Bride and Prejudice is a Bollywood spinoff of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This movie is the result of what would happen if you took a crazy colorful dance sequence and put it in every scene of Pride and Prejudice.
