Attending Ohio State has many perks, including the incredible collection of celebrities that makes their way to campus—and this year appears to be no exception. The Ohio Union Activities Board (OUAB) kicked off autumn quarter with “An Evening with Seth Meyers” on Sunday, October 2.
Meyers is known mostly as Head Writer on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” though his other major accomplishments include being a guest speaker at the 2011 White House Press Correspondents Dinner and hosting the ESPY’S.
According to OUAB Comedy Chair Fontine Baptiste, the entertainment for the night was an obvious choice.
“We have so much respectfor Seth Meyers as both a stand-up comedian and a writer,” Baptiste said. “Seth is a quick, witty, and superbly intelligent man. His audience ranges from women who are in love with his smirk to men who crave Sports Center every hour of every day.”
Brainstorming and research for the event began as early as April by the members of OUAB’s Comedy Committee, followed by finalization of the details in the summer months. Despite some minor issues, OUAB managed to put together a successful event.
“Luckily, everyone on Seth’s team was more than great. It was slightly difficult to book him simply because of Saturday Night Live’s intense schedule. Sunday is virtually their only day off, so we tried to find an off-week. We are lucky and excited that it worked out!” Baptiste added.
Over 1,500 students gathered in the Ohio Union’s Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom to watch Meyers deliver jokes on everything from politics to his trip to Las Vegas, as well as some catered to college students.
Without a doubt, attendees seemed more than pleased with his visit.
“Having seen his work on SNL I thought I knew what to expect. Luckily, he exceeded my expectations providing non-stop laughter! I mean, how can one person be such a comedic genius and keep an audience on the edge of their seats waiting for the next joke? OUAB did a great job putting this on; with all of the stress that comes from this first quarter it was really nice to have this show to help lighten the mood and help the audience forget things for one night,” said freshman Adam Todoran.
Third year OSU student Tim Collins was also highly impressed.
“I’ve seen Bob Saget, Andy Samberg, and Conan O’Brien all through OUAB and Seth Meyers has been the funniest comedian yet. He’s relevant, relatable, and downright hilarious. His stories were perfect for a college crowd and some of his jokes and me in tears. I’m looking forward to the next big-name comedian that OUAB brings, but it will be hard to top Seth,” Collins commented.
Overall, the evening appeared to be a huge success for everyone.
“Seth loved the audience and was extremely pleased with the way everything went,” Baptiste said. “I thought the event went wonderfully. Not only did we have a full house, but we also had hilarious talent and happy students.”
