How to Deal: Midterm Stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tennessee chapter.

I spent a wonderfully relaxing four days in Abingdon, VA for a little fall break getaway. I had a nice hotel room with a good friend, attended a beautiful wedding, and got to welcome in fall with a great drive. A refreshing few days away from the stresses of school was just what I needed. It wasn’t until I was sitting at work Sunday night that I remembered… I have midterms this week!

My iPhone confirmed my worries. There it was, right on the syllabi I’ve had all semester: Medieval Civilization midterm Tuesday, Political Science midterm Wednesday. That would have been the time to panic, but I had no time for panicing.

As collegiettes™ we get very used to putting our nose to the grind and doing what we have to do to get the job done. Midterms can be rough, especially when your mind is clouded with thoughts of the guy you like, your friend who’s sick, the other homework you have due… you know the drill.

But it’s time to just hunker down and get it done. Midterms will be over before you know it. So, I grabbed my study guides and got to work. As much as it stinks to use all your free time hitting the books, you will feel accomplished that you focused, studied and aced your tests!

It’s important to make sure you don’t stress yourself out. You have to take breaks to let your brain rest and keep your stress levels down. Kelci Lynn Lucier with About.com’s College Life tells students to “make sure you take a few minutes to take care of yourself.” Kelci’s top 3 midterm stress relievers are physical activity, alone time and doing something just for pleasure.

Take deep breaths, eat healthy, and make sure you take some breaks. Before you know it this week will be over, and we’ll be back to football games and nights out on the strip. Good luck!
