Fashion Forward: A Fall Fashion Week Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Fall Fashion Week may have ended last week but we still have ample time to prepare for the spring season. Don’t worry, you might not need to clean out your closet or fully shift your gears. However, there are some trends you must watch for to remain in the know this coming spring. Remember, it’s still a long way away.

As usual spring invites a plethora of pastel colors, funky patterns, and neutral tones. Spring 2012 will bring back some of the retro-mod designs we are seeing this fall, with the return of the neutral tones. Bolds will still be a hit, so hang on to your summer apparel and don’t get rid of it just yet!

The BCBG Max Azria line, for example, featured a series of angular dresses with geometrical tribal patterns and
neutral tones interspersed with bright blues, yellows, and peaches.  Long, flowy dresses with a low-cut V-neck decorate the runway at the BCBG Max Azria show. Color blocking will continue to be the trend of the season, however, designers will use it more liberally and experiment with various patterns while exploring the trend. As a huge fan of everything coming out of the Max Azria group, let me tell you that, I cannot wait for this new line. It includes all of the top trends for next year including retro-inspired pieces, playful patterns, and innovative fabric cuts.

As I said, your favorite 60s and 70s throwback looks will still be around, so keep those handy in your closet, as well. Tory Burch’s new line reinvents her signature blues and reds to give them 70s-inspired circus flair. She experiments with stripes, polka dots, and tassels to add a bit of whimsy to her line. Creativity is very clearly the name of the game next year, so try to be goofy with your look – the fashion world will not judge you for it!

Take your inner goofball on an adventure because the safari look will also make an appearance next season, with a bit of a tribal flair. Michael Kors’ Spring 2012 line features a series of earth tones and African-inspired fabrics and prints for your eyes to feast on. His take on the gladiator shoe is beyond your wildest dreams, so go big when you look for sandals next year. His line capitalizes on sandy yellows, earthy greens, and vibrant oranges – an edgier take on his previous work.

Some designers such as Balenciaga took a more modern approach and alluded to the future with their lines. Balenciaga’s new line is by far my favorite because it reminds me of Blade Runner, which features some crazy futuristic fashion. Balenciaga takes the focus off of the past, a trend we often see in the fashion world, and looks to the space era and the future. His models almost look like they stepped off of a space ship from Jupiter. The line is splashed with fluorescent colors and metallic gold and silver. Add a bit of metallic flair to your look by getting funky minx nails or investing in make-up with a metallic sheen.

As far as beauty tips go for next year, try a sleeker look. Slick back your hair into a tight, high ponytail. Channel shows like Baywatch to achieve the signature “wet
hair” look from the 90s. Neutral colors will be back again for  spring along with muted bright colors. Next year, the main beauty focus is on the face and head. Derek Lam’s models sported bold pinup eyebrows. If you want to don an eye-popping look next spring, be sure to invest in some dark brow powder from Bare Escentuals for a bolder look.

I know this is a lot of information to take it, but don’t worry, you still have ample time to stock up for next year. Plus, there is no harm in reusing some pieces from the fall or even last spring, no one will judge you for it, I promise. With next season’s emphasis on innovation and goofiness, you can muster up all sorts of fun looks from your wardrobe.

Have fun and experiment – that’s what fashion is all about!
