This Saturday, hundreds of Greek life members volunteered in Blacksburg for the 3rd annual Greeks Giving Back event. Approximately 1,000 brothers and sisters conducted various charitable tasks such as yard work, cleaning, and other household tasks. Similar to the Big Event held in the spring semester, Greeks Giving Back aims at improving the Greek lifeâs reputation with the community.
The Greeks split up into groups of 4 and set out to help clean and improve downtown Blacksburg and the surrounding neighborhoods. Some groups helped pick up trash downtown while others helped Blacksburg residents with other labors. It was also a great way to talk to whom we affectionately refer to as âthe towniesâ.
âIt was really cool to get to know some of the folks who arenât affiliated with the university and see Blacksburg through a different lens,â said Junior Samantha Thompson.
When students think of Greek life, their thoughts often jump to the social aspects of affiliation. Consequently, many fail to recognize them for their high degree of community involvement they strive for and achieve.
Thompson continues to stress the significance of the event: âPhilanthropy is one of our core values, and itâs extremely important that we come together today and give back to such a great community.â
