Chick Flicks: A Guy Primer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

Chick flicks. That simple phrase has enough testosterone sucking power to reduce any man to a quivering mass of hormonal imbalances. But only if you let it. To be honest, I love chick flicks; in fact, two of my favorite movies are chick flicks. And, I’ll let you on a little secret: girls love guys who like chick flicks. It’s sort of like the bend and snap for guys (if you don’t understand the reference read on for your own sake).  So, though your football buddies may make fun of you, you will have the last laugh when you take that pretty girl from psychology out to dinner. Here’s a short list of must see chick flicks that will certainly enhance your appeal.

1. Pride and Prejudice: Nothing says class like being able to intelligently converse about the most recent adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. This movie tells the story of the Bennett sisters’ quest for love with a primary focus on Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Also, ladies swoon over Mr. Darcy so feel free to take notes on how it’s done throughout the film. Additionally, do not feel bad if it takes you a couple sittings to get through the movie, the British accents have a strange way of curing insomnia, but the story is hardly a sleeper.

2. Gone with the Wind: The original chick flick. This monster of a movie follows the life of Scarlett O’Hara as she deals with the difficulties of maintaining the family plantation, Tara, during reconstruction after the Civil War. Rhett Butler serves as the quintessential southern gentleman and the definition of a charmer. This one will require the most dedicated movie watcher as it comes in at just under 4 hours long.

3. How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days: This romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson shows what happens when journalist, Andie Anderson, attempts to make Benjamin Barry, a big time ad executive, break up with her by breaking all the rules of dating. Her antics range from feminizing guy night to naming a certain part of Ben’s anatomy “Princess Sophia”. Despite the stigma of being a chick flick this movie consistently ranks among my faves.

4. 500 Days of Summer: Finally! A romantic movie from a guy’s prospective. I love this movie because, honestly, we can all sympathize with the protagonist, Tom Hansen, an architect turned greeting card writer who spends 500 days pursuing Summer, the girl of his dreams. This movie was done in quirky, indie style that I know the folks of W&M will love.

5. Legally Blonde: Maybe it’s my irrational obsession with Reese Witherspoon or perhaps my dream of attending Harvard Law, but this movie is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. Guys, every lady, I guarantee it, has heard of or seen this movie and with good reason. This movie tells the story of Elle Woods, a pink-loving, chihuahua-toting, sorority girl who, in an effort to regain her college sweetheart, enrolls in Harvard Law School but soon realizes her own great potential.

Gentlemen, don’t let the stigma stop you. These chick flicks are great movies with the potential to help you out big time when first meeting a potential love interest. If you can steer the conversation towards these couple of movies, you will score major points.
