Top Outdoors Activities for fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Feeling stressed, bored, or just need to clear your head? Venture outside!
Outdoor recreation is essential to a healthy mind and body. Ā In fact, it has been scientifically proven to relieve stress and depression.Ā  Autumn is a perfect time to get in touch with your inner Bear Grylls and appreciate the surrounding landscapes.
Here are the top locations for getting back to nature:
Ā

McAffee Knob
The 3.5-mile vertical climb may be a test of your endurance, but the view at the top is definitely worth it.Ā  Located just 35 minutes from Blacksburg, McAffee knob is one of the top hiking areas around and is the most photographed part of the Appalachian Trail for a good reasonā€”ā€˜the knobā€™ at the top of the mountain juts out like a diving board and offers a 270-degree view of the Catawba and Roanoke valleys.Ā  Word of Advice: No horsing around at the top; one little slip and youā€™re a goner.
Ā
Ā
Cascades
Although weā€™re adults, thereā€™s still something magical about waterfalls.Ā  Tucked 25 minutes away in the Jefferson National forest is Cascades: a 4-mile loop around Little Stony Creek which features a breathtaking 66 foot waterfall at the top.Ā  The trail can be easily conquered for almost anyone and if you get too hot, you can look forward to a refreshing dip into the swimming hole created by the waterfall.
Tip: If possible, aim for a hot day. The water temperature is rather nippy regardless of a recent warm summer.

Ā
Ā
Ā
Duck Pond
If you canā€™t make it out to the hiking areas outside of Blacksburg, try exploring the Duck pond located next to Hillcrest.Ā  Before or after class you can quickly escape into a little wilderness by taking a stroll on the Hokie Spirit Garden trail. Or, take your Fantastic Frank to go and enjoy a little picnic alongside the pond.
Ā
Ā
Dog Park
Perhaps Fido himself is getting a little restless for an outdoor adventure.Ā  The Blacksburg dog park is 5 minutes down Toms Creek Road and right near Foxridge apartments. The two-acre area is fenced and allows dozens of dog owners to let their canine companions run freely and interact with other pups. Donā€™t have a dog? Go anyway; many friendly owners will likely allow you to play with their dogs.
