In my mind, Fashion Week is a holiday: I love checking out all of the shows- thanks, style.com– and deciding which trends I’ll wear and which ones I won’t. While most people just look at the clothes and move onto the next collection, let’s not forget that makeup is equally important! Just like fashion, you can express yourself with cosmetics. Lucky for you, we’ve broken down New York Fashion Week’s beauty trends and have picked out the coolest ones to try!
Beauty Lies in the Eyes of the Beholder:
Bold eyes are a must for spring: they dominated New York’s runways! The best part about rocking a bold eye is that there are so many ways to make it your own. For Marc Jacobs’ collection, François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics, focused on a strong brow and lots of lashes. “Marc showed me images of Amy Winehouse, Patsy Klein, and Sweet Charity- all of whom had inspired him,” said Nars in a recent press release, “Because the girls are to be staring into the eyes of the audience when the curtain opens, we decided to focus on the eyes.” To recreate this look, use NARS Pandora Duo Eye Shadow on your eyebrows. The eyebrows?! Yes, it gets the job done! Also use NARS Via Veneto Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner and NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara. For a clean look, use minimal makeup for the rest of your face. That means no blush and a nude lip!
Another way to accentuate your eyes is with a sweep of metallic. As seen at the 3.1 Phillip Lim show, a metallic eye is a cool way to spice up any outfit. For a fragile and feminine look, makeup artist Francelle paired lines of metallic eye shadow with a light pink lip. If you’re craving this trend, use NARS Night Life Single Eye Shadow to get that “wow” factor. And don’t forget to use some primer: this awesome trend might not look as good if it’s not intact!
But what if these eye-deas are a little too dramatic for you? Not a problem, fashionistas, a good eyeliner can be your secret to beauty success! In order to create an edgy look for Alexander Wang’s collection, makeup artist Diane Kendal used MAC’s Eye Kohl in Smolder. This liner will give you a bold eye without the drama. To keep this trend daytime appropriate, either couple the liner with a neutral shade of eye shadow or ditch the shadow!
Feminine Nails:
Although most of us don’t think about trends when we’re at our favorite nail salon, Fashion Week does give us some great ideas for nail polish colors! While neutrals were all the rage on the runway- BCBG Max Azria’s collection incoporated OPI’s Samoan Sand and Rebecca Taylor’s models had OPI’s Tickle My France-y on their toes- there were a ton of different shades during NYFW. Pastels of all colors are very big for this upcoming spring. Hervé Léger used OPI’s Coney Island Cotton Candy– which is a very light pink , almost a neutral, in the event you’re not a nail polish connoisseur- to counteract his sultry collection. Rebecca Taylor kept her collection chic and feminine by using OPI’s Stranger Tides, a light green, for the models’ fingernails. But let’s not neglect the classic colors: Jason Wu used OPI’s Monsooner or Later, a classic red, for his models. Although red isn’t as dainty as a pastel, this shade still gives off a feminine vibe. In short, feminine nails are in!
Getting Cheeky:
Bronzed cheeks are another awesome trend for the upcoming season. I personally never use blush- my cheeks are pink enough as it is- but this trend is a cool way to create the illusion of slimmer cheeks and a healthy glow. James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry, used a mix of eye shadows, powders, and blush to create the surfer chic looks for Timo Weiland’s collection. “The blush and loose powder that we used makes them look golden and sun-burnt,” Boehmer said in a recent press release . To mimic Boehmer’s work, invest in NARS Beach Loose Powder, NARS Zen Blush, NARS Bengali Single Eye Shadow, and NARS Edie Single Eye Shadow. Here’s the kicker: use all of these products for your face!
New York Fashion Week’s beauty inspirations are super cool because you can mix and match these trends to create a look that’s truly your own. With three other Fashion Weeks to cover, definitely keep an eye out for some more ways to have fun with your cosmetics!
